For years, Joél Junior Morales (he | él) has been the affable, go-to person for the critical issues facing Central Florida’s q***r and trans communities. His command of policy and far-reaching network makes him a sought-after speaker, reliable media presence, and advisor to public officials. As a result, his impact—from social services delivery and survivors advocacy to philanthropy—is undeniable. Joél is a member of our dynamic inaugural cohort that welcomed Maven to Central Florida.

We joined him on his journey when he was in leadership at and are grateful to witness his continuous evolution, including serving as foundation manager and an independent consultant. If you need to know what’s going on in Central Florida, just ask Joél.

When we met Gabriella Rodriguez (she | her) in a small office of the Orlando United Assistance Center five years ago, she was the lifeline to critical community resources for so many people. We knew immediately that she had the unique combination of lived and professional experience to propel her to even greater social impact. Now as the executive director of QLatinx, a grassroots racial, social, and gender justice organization dedicated to the advancement and empowerment of Central Florida's LGBTQ+ Latinx community, she is doing just that.

We are incredibly grateful to have Gabriella as member of our Maven community. As a member of the inaugural Maven Leadership Cohort Orlando she sets the standard of what is possible when community leaders choose to invest in themselves. We are inspired by her directness, service to others, work ethic, and commitment to her children to herself.

Check out the incredible work of the team and support it as robustly as you can.

« I want to bear witness to community love. In the tradition of the Black church, when you witness—when you share your testimony—it is both an offering and an invitation. It is to share the good news…My story may not be your story, but it does not mean you can’t take something from it. »—Nadege Green at Maven Rising 2022

As a memory worker who insists on remembering, her brand of community love is deep and abiding. Judging from the community’s response to her testimony—in a climate where it has become increasingly important that Black q***r flox insist—the feeling is mutual. Give Them Their Flowers, is the kind of soul-nourishing community love that will endure long after the exhibit closes today at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.

Sure, we can talk about the all of the well-deserved local and national press this exhibit has garnered. But what is even more compelling is the steady stream of people of varying ages and backgrounds who made there way to the —many for the first time —« remember and excavate those memories of love that might be true for you and to be that love for someone else. » It is the way they have shared their own testimonies in the memory book found in The Repast, the sacred space created by the truly gifted . Above all else, it is the trust placed in Nadege by the Black q***r elders who shared their testimonies and extended an invitation to all of us to learn and love more deeply. The power of community love is why the wonderful agreed to co-curate and the artists .charlot shared their tremendous talents.

This exhibit, a loving tribute to her best friend Trenard Mobley, is more than resistance. It goes beyond simply existing—like true love it nourishes growth and blossoms in a way that inspires beauty in others. It inspires us to take up space more unapologetically.

And that is why when you say: Nadege, everyone in Miami knows who you are talking about. Just like all of the other one-named q***r icons.

So, on behalf of all Mavens everywhere we extend our deep gratitude and appreciation to one of our own.

You better give Nadege Green her flowers.

Did You Catch Our Op-Ed?

"…The so-called racial reckoning of 2020 — with the accompanying promises unmet and pledges from institutions faded — but the urgency of racial justice remains. History is essential to justice and our democracy, which is why we invested in the creation of this cultural memory work.

“Give Them Their Flowers” is evidence of what is possible when we provide early and robust support for Black creators and is a vehicle for reinvigorating meaningful allyship, philanthropic support and collaboration.”

This one-of-a-kind exhibit pays homage to Miami’s underexplored Black q***r history by merging historical research, archival imagery, artifacts, oral histories, video and portraits of Black LGBTQ+ Miamians over the age of 40.

Co-curated by Black Miami-Dade founder and Maven Nadege Green and curator Marie Vickles, “Give Them Their Flowers” features works by artists Vanessa Charlot, Woosler Delisfort, Kendrick Daye, Loni Johnson and Hued Songs.

04/07/2023

When Nadege Green, community historian and founder of Black Miami-Dade, sought out information on Miami’s q***r Black community for a 2019 Pride project, she was struck by how little there was available. Immediately, she set out to correct the historical vacuum about Black q***rness in Miami, while doing so in a way that told the nuanced, interiority of that experience–from the experts who lived it themselves.

Through a community-sourced approach, Green recorded oral histories from Black q***r elders in the community 40 and older. Eventually, she was able to cross-reference details from different stories and paint a broader picture of what being Black and q***r looked like in Miami during the city’s formative years. With support from Maven Leadership Collective and University of Miami’s Center for Global Black Studies ( ), Green created “Give Them Their Flowers”, a first-of-its-kind exhibit to celebrate Miami’s Black LGBTQ+ history– a celebration of the impact the community has had and continues to have in the shaping of culture in Miami and beyond.

“[Give them their Flowers] is as much a historical record as it is a visual historical record,” said Green. “It is about what it means to actually see the people I'm talking to, and to celebrate them.”
