Billy Cannon became LSU Football's first Heisman Trophy winner in 1959 after establishing himself as one of the most electrifying players of his era. Combining elite speed with incredible power, Cannon starred on both sides of the ball and helped lead LSU to a national championship in 1958.
Cannon delivered one of the most iconic plays in college football history against Ole Miss in 1959, returning a punt 89 yards for the game-winning touchdown in a 7β3 victory. The unforgettable moment helped propel him to the Heisman Trophy later that season.
A standout athlete with rare versatility, Cannon went on to a distinguished professional football career before later becoming an orthodontist. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
