Marinaleda, in the province of Seville in Andalusia, Spain, has no municipal police. According to the listing, that saves the town $350,000 a year.

Every few weeks the town hall declares a Red Sunday over a bullhorn, and volunteers clean the streets or do odd jobs. The walls are whitewashed and covered in political murals and revolutionary slogans. Streets are named after Latin American leftists.

Mayor Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo has led the town since 1979. Marinaleda is mostly agricultural, with a long history of struggle by farm laborers. The town reports practically full employment, including through the economic crisis that began in 2008.

Daybreak 破曉咖啡 in Taipei, Taiwan is the volunteer-run community space for New Bloom, an online magazine of radical perspectives on Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific. New Bloom was founded in 2014 in the wake of the Sunflower Movement.

Daybreak hosts panels, screenings, and performances. It is also home to Trif Trans Bar, Taiwan's first bar for trans and non-binary people and allies.

The Awareness League was an anarcho-syndicalist organization founded in Enugu, Nigeria, around 1990. It began as a study group connected to the University of Nigeria, made up of leftists reconsidering their Marxist frameworks as the Soviet bloc fell apart.

It grew into the largest organized anarchist formation on the African continent at the time, with members across every southern state of Nigeria and three northern states. Lecturers, journalists, civil servants, and students organized openly under military rule. Members were jailed in 1992. In 1994 the League joined petroleum workers and other labor groups in strikes. State security kept raiding its meetings, and the League kept meeting.

In 1996 it became the first African affiliate of the International Workers Association. Its members Sam Mbah and I.E. Igariwey wrote African Anarchism: The History of a Movement, drawing on pre-colonial stateless societies among Igbo peoples.

Three-course vegan dinner in Amsterdam, around five euros, cooked by volunteers. That's MKZ (Miltvuur Keuken Zuid), a community kitchen in Oud Zuid on the south edge of Vondelpark.

You eat what's served that night and wash your own dishes. There are no bosses and no paid staff. Profits go to grassroots causes chosen by the volunteers, and past events have included solidarity fundraisers for anarchist prisoners and prisoner support groups.

MKZ operates inside the Binnenpret, a former horse-tram depot on Amstelveenseweg that was squatted in February 1984 and legalized in 1989. Decades later it still houses the OCCII concert hall, the Bollox anarchist library and infocafé, artist studios, and rehearsal rooms.

Steel City Food Not Bombs is a Pittsburgh chapter of the international Food Not Bombs network. Since 2020 they've been sharing free vegan food at public distribution points that rotate weekly through neighborhoods including the Hill District.

Everything is prepared and handed out by volunteers, with no conditions on who can eat. Clothes, toiletries, and hygiene products go out too. The collective has no hierarchy and makes decisions together.

They start from the idea that food scarcity is a political condition, kept in place by systems that prioritize military spending and profit. They work in Pittsburgh's long labor and working-class context, and in 2025 they co-hosted a community potluck with Jewish Voice for Peace.

Citizens Against Tyranny Network, based in Missouri, organizes around a wide list of threats they see as connected: ICE raids and racial profiling, attacks on First Amendment and protest rights, cuts to healthcare and housing programs, militarized policing, and pressure on independent media.

Their framing is that these aren't separate crises, they're pieces of the same pattern of power consolidation. Worth a look if you're tracking resistance organizing in the Midwest.
