On June 16, 1976, twenty thousand schoolchildren in Soweto walked out of their classrooms. They were protesting the Afrikaans Medium Decree, which ordered that half of all Black secondary school subjects be taught in Afrikaans. The language of the police. The language of the pass laws. Most teachers could not teach in it. Most students could not understand it.

The apartheid government was not confused about what it was doing. The Bantu Education Act had been explicit since 1953: Black schools existed to prepare Black children for subordination. The Afrikaans decree was another mechanism in the same system.

The walkout did not come from nowhere. Teachers had protested for months. School boards had resigned. Students had organized. June 16 was what that organizing looked like in the street.

A community garden in Tulsa's Crosbie Heights sits between a neighborhood bodega, a pollinator garden, and the local bicycle club's spot. That context matters. This is a garden that grew out of a neighborhood with existing infrastructure and relationships.

The garden runs weekly volunteer workdays and ongoing workshops covering composting, medicinal and culinary herbs, pest management, and crafting. It has active compost bins, a tool and equipment shed, seating and demonstration areas, and a community bulletin board.

Volunteers use waste clay from the University of Tulsa and local pottery studios to make seed bombs and seed pops as gifts for visitors. Future plans include a raku kiln for firing kitchenware, French drains, and ollas for irrigation.

General Strike U.S. is a fiscal sponsorship partner of ARG. We pass donations through to fund their work, and we want to be clear about what that work actually is.

Political scientist Erica Chenoweth's research suggests 3.5% of the population taking sustained action is enough to force serious political change. In the U.S., that's 11 million people. General Strike U.S. built the Strike Card to track commitments toward that number. Signers can submit online, by mail, or in person at community events and rallies. The count is nearly 450,000, growing month over month, across geography, without a central institution holding it together.

Their chapters are running Feeding the Fight right now, mutual aid events built on solidarity. Events are coming up this month in Connecticut, Chattanooga, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids. Register your event and General Strike U.S. will send you an organizing toolkit.

In January 1912, the textile mills of Lawrence, Massachusetts cut wages after a state law shortened the workweek by two hours. For workers already earning around nine dollars a week, that meant losing several loaves of bread.

Polish women weavers at the Everett Mill opened their pay envelopes on January 11, saw the shortage, and walked out. Within a week, more than twenty thousand workers were on strike.

The American Federation of Labor had spent decades arguing that immigrant workers, women, and children could not be organized. The IWW proved them wrong, building a strike committee with delegates from every nationality, translating every meeting into more than a dozen languages, and letting the workers run their own strike.
