"Handsome Improvements Made by Citizens National Bank" - Read a front-page headline on the December 1, 1921, issue of the Meyersdale Republican. As part of the accompanying story, the bank's new vault was highlighted as follows ... "The spirit of improvement became manifest a year ago when a new armor-plate vault was installed, nineteen tons of the hardest kind of steel known to science being used in constructing the walls, floor and ceiling, thus making a strong box that would defy any kind of burglar's tools, fire or explosives. The interior of the vault is divided into two equal parts, one compartment being for the safekeeping of the bank's cash, securities, books, records, etc., the other compartment being fitted with private safe deposit boxes. Access to the interior of the vault can only be had by the opening of a time-lock door, six tons in weight, but so evenly balanced on its hinges that when unlocked it can be pulled open or pushed shut by the pressure of one finger. The mechanism of this door is of the very latest burglar-proof invention. It is a marvel of delicacy and strength."
This photo was snapped the morning of October 17, 2026, by our Meyersdale Public Library's archivist, Jennifer Hurl, as she pondered how nice it would be to have such a vault for all of our community's historical treasures housed inside the library's Pennsylvania Room.
