The Miss Missouri Pageant has called Mexico home for many years, and our club always looks forward to the opportunity to meet these outstanding young women as they visit our community.

One of the guiding principles of Rotary is Service Above Self, the belief that leadership is about how we use our time, talents, and heart to serve others. It’s choosing to lead, to give back, and to make your community stronger.

Congratulations to these Mexico High School seniors who were selected for our 2026 scholarships. Each student completed an application process with an essay, a resume, and examples of service and leadership in our schools and community.

Our Rotary board had the privilege of reviewing applications, and selecting eleven students, each for a $1000 scholarship.

Congrats to:

Today at Mexico Rotary, we heard from our own Dr. Charles Tillman, guest of Rotarian Sebastian Heintz, who shared his passion for science, space exploration, and the future of human spaceflight.

Dr. Tillman gave members an overview of Artemis II, NASA’s recent mission that sent four astronauts on a 10-day journey covering approximately 685,000 miles around the moon and back. 🌕🚀

He walked us through the technology behind space photography and communications, moon science, spacecraft design, and how today’s missions compare to the Apollo program and SpaceX era.

Dr. Tillman also shared how we got to this point in space exploration, along with a look at NASA’s budget, then and now.

Thank you, Dr. Tillman, for an engaging presentation. Your passion for science and space is contagious, and we enjoyed learning from you! 🚀🔭

Today at Mexico Rotary, we heard from one of our own, Ross Fryer, who shared insights from one of his favorite books, “The Automatic Millionaire” — a book he first read in college and still references today.

Ross walked members through key principles of personal finance, investing, and the power of compound interest, showing how small, consistent decisions can make a big impact over time. He also shared thoughts on long-term investing, the S&P 500, and the importance of staying focused through the ups and downs of intra-year market performance.

It was an engaging and practical conversation that reminded us all that financial success often comes down to discipline, patience, and letting time do the heavy lifting.

Thank you, Ross, for sharing your knowledge and helping our club learn more about investing, financial planning, and building wealth for the future! 📈

Today at Mexico Rotary, we heard from our own Rotarian, Dr. Troy Lentz, Superintendent of Mexico Public Schools.

Dr. Lentz provided an update on local, state, and federal budgets, along with progress on the current bond construction at Mexico High School. He also shared insights on recruitment and retention of certified staff and the ongoing work to support the Bulldog team.

As always, he brought the room to life with a few great stories that highlighted the many positive things happening across our schools and the many ways MPS celebrates student learning.

Dr. Lentz encouraged community members to stay connected and involved, whether through programs like Lunch Buddies or simply reaching out to learn more about what’s happening in our schools.

Thank you, Dr. Lentz, for the update!

Last week at Mexico Rotary, we welcomed Christal Bruner, Director of the Mexico-Audrain County Library.

Christal shared the rich history of the library, and how the library continues to evolve to meet the needs of today’s community.

She reminded us that this is truly a county library system, serving not only Mexico, but also Vandalia, Farber, Martinsburg, and Laddonia. Patrons can reserve materials and pick them up at any location, making access convenient across the region.

The library offers so much more than books, including:
• Audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers
• Children’s and adult programs
• Interlibrary loan services
• Equipment rentals like projector screens
• Services such as faxing, notary, meeting rooms, and genealogy resources

Christal also highlighted newer digital offerings like Hoopla, Libby (for eBooks and audiobooks), and NewsBank, which provides access to publications like the Mexico Ledger and Kansas City Star, along with national magazines.

The 2025 numbers tell a strong story of impact:
124,863 total items circulated
27,402 digital checkouts
49,224 library visits
13,528 reference questions answered by staff
9,041 wireless connections
6,122 new items added to the collection

One of the library’s longest-running programs, “SMILE,” will celebrate 40 years next year, continuing to connect second-grade students with literacy through partnerships with local schools.

Christal also shared updates on ongoing improvements, including a full elevator modernization project to bring the original system up to current code.

After 50 years with the library, Christal’s passion for literacy and early reading development is still at the heart of everything they do.

Thank you, Christal, for sharing how the library continues to serve, grow, and support learning across Audrain County!
