Disco Soup is a global concept but who had the crazy idea to bring it to Metuchen? Keep reading...

Elias hails from the U.K. and has a background in international humanitarian aid and has worked in Mozambique, Liberia, and South Sudan throughout his career. He has joined food waste campaigns in the U.K. to "fill bellies not bins". Fast forward a few years and life, love, and family have led to Metuchen, where he now calls home. Like many of us, he saw the warmth and generous spirit of our community but kept wondering how can there still be hunger amidst all this abundance?

So, funnily enough, at school pick up one day, he said to fellow Kindergartener parent and friend, Jackie (their kids have been friends since diapers!), "I have a crazy idea..."

Jackie is a self-proclaimed Metuchen fangirl. Since moving to Metuchen in 2020 with a newborn, she's felt so welcome and supported by this community and in turn gives back however she can. She serves on the Metuchen Human Relations Commission, the Metuchen Farmers Market Board, the Moss PTO Board, is a co-founder of the emerging Children's Museum of Central Jersey, runs a marketing agency The Thumbs Behind Marketing, and works at the Metuchen Public Library doing their Communications and Community Outreach. Through many of these organizations, Jackie was able to connect Elias and we have ourselves a Metuchen Disco Soup event!

Join us on June 20th – come for the soup, stay for the music, and leave as part of the
movement. Let’s prove that in New Jersey, we don’t just make food, we celebrate it
as a resource that can transform our communities for good!

The Disco Soup concept is not a new one, it's been done many times worldwide. But when we thought to do it in Metuchen, we knew it would be easy because of the amazing people and families that make up this town. Enter: Michelle & Mike! Better known as the powerhouse behind What's The Scoop! 🍦

Since 2001, What’s the Scoop has been serving the people and families of Metuchen and Edison homemade ice cream made from the finest ingredients. Located in the center of downtown, Scoop has been the go to spot for the locals after school or after the game. When we approached them with this idea, they were immediately in! After enjoying a community soup meal of rescued produce, we can enjoy ice cream and bask in the summer solstice together!

What's a Disco Soup event without some sick beats?? 🔮🕺💃 Meet our DJs!

DJ Mel has been at it since 2008, with sets ranging from a lounge bar in the East Village in NYC to house parties, family reunions, and most recently, a block party here in Metuchen! By day, she's a Creative Director and Digital Marketer. My favorite genre of music is House Music. Give up some UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ for DJ Mel!

And DJ Jay...we gotta figure him out together! He's a lawyer by day and he doesn't have a favorite genre of music?!?!?! What?? He will be spinning Disco and Post-Disco R&B so we'll look forward to that!

We're so thrilled to have many partners helping to make Metuchen Disco Soup a reality! 🍲🥕♻ Today we'd like to feature, the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen's Food Pantry, a pillar in our community!

The FPC Food Pantry is a dedicated mission of the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen. The pantry has evolved from a small local operation into a vital regional hub serving individuals and families across Metuchen and Edison. With a primary mission to provide healthy food in a dignified and inclusive manner, the pantry offers nutritious groceries, fresh produce, microwavable meals from the Elijahs Promise Soup Kitchen, and dry goods to those facing food insecurity. Following a significant expansion in late 2025, the facility now operates with increased capacity and extended hours and wrap around services including access to SNAP, mental health resources and housing case works to better support the community. Driven by a diverse team of volunteers from local schools, businesses, and scout troops, the pantry serves as a cornerstone of local outreach, fostering stability and independence for its neighbors.

We are so grateful to them for providing a venue, a KITCHEN, and a lot of magic to make this event happen! 🙏🏻
