August 31st marks National Overdose Awareness Day when we honor and remember those who have lost their lives to the drug overdose epidemic. Last year, the United States saw yet another record year of overdose deaths with more than 107,000 lives lost. The synthetic opioid fentanyl was the primary driver behind 88% of all opioid overdose deaths.
In 2022 in Massachusetts, more than 2,290 lives were tragically lost to opioid-related overdose, with 93% of overdose deaths related to fentanyl. (MA.Gov) Since January 2022, Methuen has had 27 individuals overdose with 11 resulting in death. These numbers represent those we responded to, not to mention the overdoses unaccounted for whereas a family member and/or loved one has administered Narcan.
Community members joined C.A.R.E.S. Initiative and Chief Scott J. McNamara in placing over 2,290 “purple” flags outside the police station to acknowledge those lives lost. These individuals are someone’s grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, brother, sister, and friend. These numbers are the “WHY” we do what we do to help those struggling with addiction in HOPES to lower the numbers of individuals dying and show them Recovery Is Possible.
