Jefferson Amateur Radio Club - W5GAD Amateur radio club and ARRL affiliate. Our members benefit from camaraderie and a full time clubhouse with great radios and antennas.

We serve the community with ham and GMRS repeaters and help with communications in emergencies We maintain several VHF and UHF repeaters for the use of all licensed operators in the New Orleans area. System Fusion and FM:

Build your own 2 meter Yagi for FREE.

During the Jefferson ARC Open House Saturday August 1, 2026, we will be having an educational session where participants will build their own 2 meter Yagi antenna to take home. All parts needed are provided by the club for FREE.

You don’t need any knowledge about antenna building. You will be guided by former club president Nick Frederick, W4NDF.

Because this antenna concentrates your signal in one direction, it increases your Effective Radiated Power (ERP) when transmitting and eliminates background noise when:

- Reaching Distant Repeaters: Pointing it at a distant repeater (50+ miles away) allows you to hit stations you couldn't reach with a standard rubber duck antenna.

- Locating Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) or electrical noise sources in your neighborhood.

- Satellite & ISS Contacts: The portable nature makes it ideal to take outdoors to track and talk through amateur radio satellites and the International Space Station.

- Foxhunting/ARDF: Highly directional gain makes it the standard choice for sniffing out hidden transmitters in Amateur Radio Direction Finding.

Amateur radio is still relevant in today’s technology environment. When there is no utility power, no internet connection, and no cell phone working - we can send emails and text messages, and talk with people all over South Louisiana, the nation, and the world.

Stop by Jefferson Amateur Radio Club clubhouse in Wally Pontiff Jr Playground, Metairie, LA, and learn about the services we procvide to the community. North American Field Day is this weekend - yearly since 1933 - where we demonstrate to the public the services we provide in Emergency Operations and in other ways.

We are looking for folks who want to help out with ARRL Field Day on June 27, 28 at the club in Wally Pontriff Playground in Metairie. Lots of opportunity to do CW, SSB, and FT-8 and there are lots of other jobs to do that don't involve getting on the radio or lifting anything heavy. You don't have to be a member, or even a license ham operator.

So bring your kids, friends, neighbors and come see what amateur radio is all about and why we love it
