Building Strong Readers Starts Early 💙

What does effective early literacy instruction look like in an early childhood classroom?

Over the next several weeks, we'll be sharing our Early Childhood Literacy Checklist, a series highlighting nine essential components that help build strong literacy foundations for young learners.

From print-rich environments and phonological awareness to family engagement and emergent writing, each component plays an important role in supporting literacy success.

Follow along as we explore practical strategies that help children become confident readers, writers, and communicators.

📋 Part of our series.

Based on research from NELP (2008), NRP (2000), Neuman & Roskos (2020), Lonigan (2015), and Cabell et al. (2019). Love this resource? Contact Jennifer McLain at [email protected] to learn more.

Happy Sine Die! As the 2026 Louisiana legislative session comes to a close, The Center for Literacy & Learning is proud to have supported legislation that advances proven literacy strategies and strengthens outcomes for Louisiana students.

This session, we were especially proud to support HB 992, HB 1146, HB 316, and HB 271, bills that help expand evidence-based practices, strengthen educational opportunities, and keep literacy at the forefront of student success.

Thank you to the legislators, educators, advocates, and partners who continue working to ensure every child has the opportunity to become a strong reader. The work continues, and we are grateful to be part of it.

As National Get Caught Reading Month comes to a close, the importance of literacy doesn’t end here. 📚💙

Reading opens doors, builds confidence, strengthens communities, and creates opportunity for lifelong learning.

So keep grabbing a book, reading with your family, and making literacy part of everyday life—because every page matters.

Students with strong phonics foundations are significantly more likely to become proficient readers.

Research shows that explicit, systematic phonics instruction in the early grades can improve reading outcomes, especially for students at risk of reading difficulties. Science of Reading–aligned instruction continues to highlight phonics as a key component of literacy success.

At The Center for Literacy & Learning, we’re proud to support evidence-based instruction and educator training that helps strengthen literacy outcomes for students across Louisiana. 💙

As National Get Caught Reading Month comes to a close, we’re looking back on an incredible Literacy Day at the Capitol earlier this month.

From students and educators to lawmakers and advocates, the day was a powerful reminder that Louisiana is united in moving literacy forward. We’re grateful to everyone helping build a stronger future for readers across our state.
