First Christian Church of Mesquite, TX BELIEFS AND HISTORY OF FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH

The First Christian Church is one of the first churches to be established in Mesquite.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), while founded on American soil in the early 1800s, is uniquely equipped to live up to its identity that it is a "movement for wholeness in a fragmented world." A few members met in humble beginnings in 1870 in the Masonic Hall in Scyene, Texas, just west of present day Mesquite. By 1884 the congregation had grown considerably and the members decided to

establish a meeting place in Mesquite and erected a small building on the City

Square. The congregation soon outgrew this building and in 1905 a contemporary Church was built at Kimbrough and Lawrence with an education annex added in 1945. In 1950 plans for a new building began. Ground breaking for the current site at 827 South Galloway was held on July 21, 1958 and the first unit of a long-range program was completed in 1959. This unit consisted of the

sanctuary, with a seating of two hundred, kitchen, pastor/secretary with adjoining rest room, ten classrooms, two rest rooms and a small chapel. The fellowship hall and additional classrooms were added in 1965. The Disciples of Christ denomination was born on the American frontier in the first few decades of the nineteenth century. At this time the frontier was in central Kentucky and western Pennsylvania and the Stone and Campbell movements arose in these areas. The new body of Christians multiplied with the frontier as it pushed westward through the late 1890s. The Bible is the foundation for all the doctrine of the Disciples of Christ.
