For more than 25 years, Heather Webb has helped Arizona students see what’s possible for their futures and helped school counselors and CTE leaders strengthen the pathways to get them there.

Her career has taken her from teaching 8th graders to high school counseling, and she is just completing her term as President of ACTEAZ. Throughout it all, Heather’s career has been rooted in supporting students through career exploration, academic planning, and real-world readiness.

Her story is also a reminder of the critical role school counselors play in helping students connect their interests, strengths, and goals to meaningful postsecondary pathways.

“Arizona desperately needs skilled, trained professionals who are certified and career ready,” Heather shared. “School counselors play a pivotal role in supporting students with career discovery, high school course selection, and career or college pathway planning.”

Thank you, Heather, for being a champion for students, CTE programs, and the counseling profession across Arizona. 💙

Sometimes advocacy looks like this—
not a stage, not a spotlight… but real conversations happening in real time.

School counselors from across Arizona coming together, asking questions, and listening closely.
Moments like these create space for important dialogue with education leaders, giving counselors a seat at the table where decisions are being discussed and perspectives are shared.

This is the work.

Showing up. Staying informed. Asking questions that matter for our students and our profession.

When you become an AzSCA member, you’re stepping into:
✔️ A collective voice in statewide conversations
✔️ Direct connection to education leaders and decision-makers
✔️ A community committed to advocacy and growth

As the school year winds down, it’s a powerful time to stay connected to what’s next.

What if MTSS wasn’t just another initiative…
but the framework that actually makes your work more effective—and sustainable?

With 16 years of experience in schools and a career dedicated to helping counselors become effective systemic change agents, Dr. Donohue brings both the real-world perspective and the research to back it up. She’s also co-editor of The School Counselor’s Guide to MTSS and Making MTSS Work—so you’re learning from someone who’s helped shape the field.

Join us for the AzSCA Summer Series: MTSS, a two-part virtual training designed to help you better support students across all tiers:

You may have heard the term “free range parenting”…
but what does that actually mean for students—and schools?

At its core, it’s about giving kids age-appropriate independence so they can build confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience.

Not no rules.
Not no supervision.
But guided independence.

As school counselors, we see the impact of this every day.

Students grow when they’re given space to:
✔️ Make small decisions on their own
✔️ Try, fail, and try again
✔️ Build confidence through real-life experiences

And we also play a role in helping families find the balance:
→ Supporting independence while still keeping safety and structure in place

Because the goal isn’t to step back completely—
it’s to step back just enough for students to step forward.

Summer break is coming—but learning doesn’t have to hit pause.

The “summer slide” is real, especially for students who lose access to structure, enrichment, and everyday learning opportunities during the break.

As school counselors, one of the most impactful things we can do is connect families to local resources that keep students engaged:

✔️ Library summer reading programs
✔️ Community centers & youth activities
✔️ Local camps and enrichment programs
✔️ School or district summer opportunities

The next time you attend an AzSCA event or log into the member portal… there’s a good chance Cien Luke helped make that experience possible.

While AzSCA’s volunteer leadership drives so much of the work you see throughout the year, the person helping keep everything moving behind the scenes is Executive Director, Cien Luke.

Cien has been with AzSCA for the past 15 years, making her the institutional memory of our organization. Chair Lines come and go, but Cien carries the historical knowledge that informs many of the important discussions and decisions we make as an organization.

Whenever AzSCA embarks on a new project or faces a major policy decision, Cien researches all sides of the issue so leadership understands the pros and cons before moving forward.

Every day, she manages the day-to-day operations of the organization — from finances and membership recruitment to database management, media requests, student research proposals, and much more.

Because of Cien’s support, AzSCA’s Board leadership is able to focus on the bigger picture: advocating for school counselors and supporting students across Arizona.

We are incredibly grateful for her work and hope you are, too 💙

The Purple Star designation honors schools that make a clear, ongoing commitment to serving military-connected students through things like:

⭐ A designated staff point of contact for military families
⭐ Transition support for students entering and leaving schools
⭐ Staff training on military family needs
⭐ Dedicated resources and communication for military-connected students

Because when students feel seen, supported, and understood… they’re better equipped to thrive, no matter where they’re coming from.

You hear a lot about AzSCA’s conference, advocacy work, and professional development opportunities throughout the year.

But have you ever wondered who helps make all of that happen behind the scenes?

AzSCA’s Board of Directors and Board at Large spend countless hours working on behalf of school counselors across Arizona — advocating at the state capitol, supporting professional development, and helping guide the direction of our organization.

These volunteer leaders work alongside their own school responsibilities because they believe in ensuring that all Arizona students have access to skilled school counselors throughout their academic careers.

Their work may not always be visible day-to-day, but its impact reaches school counselors and students across the entire state.

We’re incredibly grateful for the leadership, time, and dedication they continue to give to AzSCA 💙

Hey there National Physical Fitness & Sports Month 🏃‍♀️

Here is your reminder that supporting students goes beyond the counseling office.

Sometimes it looks like movement.
A reset in the middle of the day.
A space to build confidence in a different way.

That’s where collaboration matters.

School counselors and PE teachers are both supporting the whole student—just in different ways.

Helping students:
✔️ Manage stress
✔️ Build healthy habits
✔️ Grow confidence and resilience

Shoutout to the PE teachers who are part of that support system every single day 👏
