🚨 BREAKING: We are proud to stand with a national coalition of civil rights organizations in denouncing the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) unlawful abdication of its fair housing duties.

A recent whistleblower complaint filed by five brave HUD employees confirms our worst fears: the agency responsible for protecting us from housing discrimination is actively undermining that very mission.

The complaint reveals HUD has:
1️⃣ Set a policy of refusing to act on fair housing complaints disfavored by the Trump administration.
2️⃣ Stripped authority from career officials to fulfill their statutory duties.
3️⃣ Deliberately undermined enforcement from within.

This is a betrayal of the Fair Housing Act and of every person who relies on HUD for protection. It leaves veterans, seniors, survivors of domestic violence, people with disabilities, and communities of color without a critical shield against discrimination.

We commend the courage of these public servants. We urge Congress to investigate immediately and demand HUD Secretary Ben Carson uphold his promise to enforce our nation’s fair housing laws.

Today marks the 65th anniversary of the Act of 1957. Signed by President Eisenhower, this historic act established the Civil Rights Division in the U.S. Justice Department. While this Act primarily focused on protecting voting rights, the creation of the Civil Rights Division laid the groundwork for enforcing future laws that combat discrimination in housing, education, employment, healthcare, and credit.

Let’s honor this milestone by continuing to fight for civil rights and work towards a future where every person has access to safe and affordable housing!

The Arizona Fair Housing Center (azfhc.org), alongside a coalition of Arizona-based civil rights, consumer, and housing justice organizations, is raising our voice. We have joined a national call, signing a joint letter to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and HUD, strongly urging them to withdraw a pending Final Rule that would critically weaken the disparate impact standard.

This legal tool is essential for fighting housing discrimination that is systemic, even if it's not overt. Protecting it is vital for ensuring equal opportunity for all Arizonans.

The number of fair housing complaints filed nationwide peaked to record numbers for the third year in a row in 2023. This according to the latest Fair Housing Trends Report released annually by the National Fair Housing Alliance.
There were 34,150 fair housing complaints in 2023, compared to 33,006 complaints in 2022.
Complaints of harassment increased by 66 percent - the highest since
NFHA began reporting harassment-specific data in 2006.
Harassment based on color increased by 470.59 percent.

The numbers continue an upward trend that highlights the need for adequate funding for local agencies working to address housing discrimination. Just this week, House lawmakers put forth a spending bill that funds the Department of Housing and Urban Development at far less than what local organizations need to adequately serve victims of housing discrimination.
