Human dignity is the reason why man is worth respecting. That is why human dignity grants us human rights. Which means to give respect as an African American, I feel we have to have an understanding of human dignity. Human dignity is something I am still trying to fully understand. When you have respect for someone else, your understanding of human dignity becomes stronger. Our dignity is part of our identity. Our common identity is that we all have human rights. When one has no understanding of his identity, one has no sense of direction. Without direction, one is completely lost. OUR STAFF & VOLUNTEERS
Our Staff and Volunteers take pride in highlighting, promoting and supporting supplementary education to help African American Youth and their families get the best support for their educational and cultural needs.

April 29th In Black History:

“Riots break out in Los Angeles after four police officers were acquitted in the beating of Rodney King”

After a jury acquitted four police officers in the 1991 videotaped beating of Rodney King, a Black motorist, widespread riots broke out in South Central Los Angeles. Violence and looting persisted for six days in the largely Black and Latino neighborhood, with property damages estimated at $1 billion. Fifty-four people were killed and thousands more were hurt in the melee. Over a year earlier, on March 3, 1991, King had been involved in a high-speed chase down a Los Angeles-area freeway. Following the chase, a bystander captured video of four officers — four white and one Latino — repeatedly beating and kicking King as he lay on the ground and released the video to a local news station, sparking national furor over police brutality and racism in America.

In addition, on this day in 1968, The Poor People’s Campaign held a rally in Washington, D.C., under the theme “Let’s Continue His Work,” a reference to slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated on April 4, 1968. King organized the Poor People’s Campaign in November 1967 and, following his death, his close friend and fellow civil rights activist Ralph Abernathy carried on the group’s mission of addressing issues of economic justice and housing for poor people of all races in the United States.

SONG CHOICE OF THE DAY:

“No Time” by Fantasia

They gon' talk about you
Of course they gon' complain
They're not used to flexing
The spaces are not diamond
And diamonds wait until time and
You feel some type of way
She got s**t to say
They gon' say some things that don't
Do nothing but remind me
And if they're bringing up problems
There's no time for it
You wanna tell me how it is
But there's no time for it
You wanna tell me how you feel
But there's no time for it
Do you thing, get your change
By the way don't you think I'mma care cause I'm not
Got my mind on my money
And the hate don't really matter, nah
There's no time for it
Oh-oh, there's no time for it
No time, no time, no time

DID YOU KNOW?

Sarah E. Goode (Inventor)

Sarah Elisabeth Goode was one of the first African-American women to obtain a patent from the United States government in 1885. She shares the distinction with Judy Reed, who invented a dough-kneading machine that was patented in 1880, and Miriam Benjamin, who received a patent in 1888 for a hotel chair that signaled the service of a waiter.

Little has been confirmed of Goode’s early life, but it is believed that in 1860, at age five, she was living as Sarah Jacobs, a free inhabitant of Toledo, Ohio. By 1870, she had moved to Chicago, Illinois and by 1880 was married to Archibald Goode, a carpenter/stair builder. The couple had children, but the exact number is unknown.

On July 14, 1885, Sarah Goode was granted patent number 322,177 from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a folding cabinet bed. The bed was designed to make maximum efficient use of small spaces where surface area was limited. Known today as the “hide-away bed,” Goode’s invention had hinged sections that were easily raised or lowered. When not functioning as a bed, the invention could easily be used as a desk because there were small compartments for storing supplies. This was ideal for urban apartments of Chicago where living space was shared and limited.

Aside from Goode’s invention and lineage, little is known about her life. Although some biographies indicate that Sarah Goode became a successful owner of a furniture store in Chicago, this has not been confirmed. However, Goode’s father and husband were carpenters, and this could have influenced her knowledge about furniture construction. It is believed that Sarah Goode died in Chicago on April 8, 1905.

TODAY IN BLACK HISTORY:

“Ma Rainey”

On April 26, 1886, blues songstress Ma Rainey was born in Columbus, Georgia. Known as "Mother of the Blues," Rainey, born Gertrude Pridgett, is credited as the first popular entertainer to incorporate the blues style into her performances.
She married comedian William "Pa" Rainey in 1904 and the couple toured together throughout the South. Her travels exposed her to the burgeoning blues scene and, by 1905, she was thrilling audiences with the soulful style. Between 1923 to 1928, she made over 100 recordings, including one of her best known hits, “Bo-Weavil Blues" (1923), and worked with a number of luminaries, including Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. Her music is also noted as the muse for Harlem Renaissance poets such as Langston Hughes and Sterling Brown.
At 53, she passed away from a heart attack in 1939. Rainey was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:

When will we as Black People unite as ONE?

The lack of unity among African Americans is the major reason for the many ills that afflict our people and our communities. The disheartening truth is that many African Americans do not see themselves as one race of people.

Over the years there has been many books, speeches, and research studies that offer solutions to the problems confronting African Americans and the communities they live in. Many of these solutions do have potential and may be of great value; however, they are missing the most crucial element to success; that element is unity.

Unity represents oneness of mind, heart and soul. Unity is cultivated amongst human beings through some sort of common denominator. Without one or more common denominators, unity is practically impossible. Religion, culture, moral values, and traditions are all perfect examples of a common trait or element that will cultivate unity.

ON THIS DAY IN BLACK HISTORY:
APRIL 25th

Ella Fitzgerald, one of the most prominent singers of the 20th century, was born on this day in Newport News, Virginia.
In 1934, a 16-year-old Fitzgerald got her big break following a show-stopping performance at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. More success at the Apollo and other venues followed, and Fitzgerald was invited to join Chick Webb’s jazz band, where she scored her first hit, "A-Tisket A-Tasket," in 1938.
In the 1940s, Fitzgerald embarked on a successful solo career and became known for her signature “scatting” technique and also performed with jazz legends such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Sinatra. Fitzgerald continued to woo audiences with her silky vocals through the 1980s, but retired in 1990 due to failing health. She recorded more than 2,000 songs and sold more than 40 million records. She passed away on June 15, 1996, at the age of 78.

Let it go
Can't let this thing called love get away from you
Feel free right now, go do what you want to do
Can't let nobody take it away, from you, from me, from we
No time for moping around, are you kidding?
And no time for negative vibes, 'cause I'm winning
It's been a long week, I put in my hardest
Gonna live my life, feels so good to get it right
So I like what I see when I'm looking at me
When I'm walking past the mirror
Don't stress through the night, at a time in my life
Ain't worried about if you feel it
Got my head on straight, I got my vibe right
I ain't gonna let you kill it
You see I wouldn't change my life, my life's just fine.
