Building Bridges. Creating Opportunities. Helping newly arrived families adjust to life in America. What does “home” mean to you?

For most of us it means safety, security, family and community. For families arriving as refugees, they’ve fled home because it was no longer a place of safety. This leaves them disconnected from extended family, comforts of cultural norms and their broader community. Many refugees arrive in the Phoenix area with only the support of the Resettlement Agency workers. Lack of support from the broader community compounds struggles with adjusting to cultural, economic, linguistic, educational, emotional, and occupational realities of life in their new country. Through the vision of Matthew House, we hope to bridge these divides, and create opportunities for housing, language, educational support and relationship connections that enable refugee and immigrant families to imagine a future for themselves and truly make their new community “home.”

July was a wonderful month at Matthew House. We saw our new space filled to the brim with familles learning valuable skills and resources for economic empowerment. 40 of our Matthew House moms and children shared in a fun morning of learning, play, and friendship at the IDEA Museum. Our team put on workshops to support clients in advancing their careers, and as always, great connections were made through learning and practicing English together.

As we shift into gear for our fall programming, be on the lookout for new opportunities to volunteer with us! We couldn’t do this work without you.

This Giving Tuesday, we’re building more than programs - we’re building belonging. When a refugee family arrives in Arizona, they’re stepping into a new country, a new culture, and a new life.

At Matthew House, these families receive housing support, mentorship, tutoring, job coaching and a welcoming community. We believe belonging creates the foundation for a successful future.
