Laura Chico Gimo is turning a small plot of land in Nhamayabwe 1 into a steady source of food, planted, tended, and harvested season after season.

Growing the food is only half the work. What happens after harvest, drying and preserving what families grow, is what turns a good season into food security that lasts through the lean months too.

Six months ago, Mrs. Ana couldn't write her name.

Today she can read, write, and complete a full written text on her own. She's one of the participants in Care for Life's adult literacy program, meeting alongside neighbors who are learning right beside her, some for the first time in their lives.

Ana isn't just showing up for herself anymore. She's inviting everyone she knows to come do the same.

"My sisters and brothers, there's no age limit for learning. Come and let's learn."

A health campaign moved through Mafambisse 1, Macharote Central, and Nhamayabwe 1 this June, and it did three jobs at once.

452 people vaccinated. Children and women of childbearing age.

436 children registered at birth. A birth certificate is what makes a child legible to the systems that serve them. Without one, school and healthcare can stay out of reach for an entire childhood.

468 people counseled and tested, learning their status. All positive results were connected to care right away.

None of that happens by running three separate programs on three separate weeks. It happens by meeting families once, in the places they were already gathered, with everything ready. Community leaders stayed close to families throughout and made the turnout possible.

In June, water started running in two communities.

Two new water supply sources were delivered in Macharote Central. Days later, a new well reached Nhamayabwe 1. The Mayor of Dondo was there. So were officials from the District Planning and Infrastructure Service, standing next to the community leaders and promoters who have been doing this work all along.

One of the officials asked families to make good use of the water and conserve it so it lasts for many years to come. That request is the whole model in one sentence. Care for Life doesn't drop infrastructure and leave. Communities elect their own pump committees, learn the repairs, and take the thing on as theirs.

A pump lasts longer than a ceremony when the people who use it own the work of keeping it running.

Julia isn't just learning to read. She's recruiting her neighbors to do the same.
A widow raising her daughters on her own, Julia joined the adult and youth literacy group in her community, where a facilitator named Armando leads classes. But literacy is only part of her story. For three years she's been part of a savings and credit group, using it to build small businesses at home that keep her daughters fed, clothed, and in school.
Reading, saving, earning. For Julia they're the same project: a more secure future for her family. And now she's telling everyone she can to come get all three.
"I want to invite everyone else to come to the center not just to read and write, but also to learn how to do business and save money to help our children with school, buy clothes, and much more."

Some of the best learning doesn't look like a lesson at all.
In a children's well-being club in Macharote Central, led by Marta Catu, the kids spent a session learning to sew. Needle, thread, and a bit of patience, and they made these small bags themselves, proud enough to hold them up.
The clubs are about more than the craft. They give children a place to build confidence, try new things, and feel like they belong. Skills they get to keep, and a bit of pride they earned on their own.
Not bad for an afternoon's work.

Before a single garden grows, it looks like this. Neighbors handing neighbors the seeds to start. These are garden promoters in Nhamayabwe, trained members of the community who carry what they've learned back to the families around them. This month they're distributing seeds across their zones, the first step in a season of household food production.
That's the whole idea behind how Care for Life's Family Preservation program works. Not an outside crew planting for people, but locals equipping their own neighbors to grow their own food. A birth certificate doesn't look like much. For a child, it's the difference between existing on paper and not.
During a week-long health campaign in Mafambisse, 176 children received birth registration. That single document is what lets a child enroll in school, get treated at a health center, and be protected under the law. Many of these families had never been able to reach that paperwork before.
The campaign didn't stop there. In the same week, families could get tested and referred for care. 203 people took the HIV test, and everyone who needed follow-up was linked directly to the health unit. Services that are usually scattered across months and long distances, brought together in one place, in one week.
That's what meeting families where they are looks like.

The savings habit is spreading past the families we work with.
This is a savings group in one of our communities. Women meeting the way they do most weeks, counting deposits, recording them in the book, setting money aside together toward what their families need.
Here's the part worth sitting with. This month, 86 people from outside the program started saving alongside them. Nobody enrolled them. They watched neighbors build a habit that works and decided they wanted in.
That's how self-reliance actually spreads. Not because an organization pushes it, but because families see it working next door and take it up on their own.
430 deposits went in this month across the groups, from 360 families saving, with a widening circle of neighbors now saving beside them.

Two new communities joined the Family Preservation Program this month: Mutua 2 and Mutua 3.
Families turned out in large numbers for the launch, standing alongside the leaders who'll walk the road with them: Permanent Secretary Manuel, the head of the Mutua/Alzira locality, the head of the Mafambisse post, and Américo, Dondo's Director of Infrastructure.
Every Care for Life community starts this way. Local government and the families themselves, committed together on day one. That's what makes the work hold long after the program moves on.
The timing tells its own story. These two communities are just beginning while others are finishing the program and stepping into independence. New families rising as others graduate.
