The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a nationwide organization dedicated to helping American youth realize personal success and achievement through a nautically oriented training program. Through Sea Cadet leadership, young Americans ages 10 through 17 develop interest and skill in basic seamanship and its naval adaptations, while learning the valve of patriotism, courage, self-reliance, teamwork, and accountability.
The cadets study a broad range of subjects. Some are designed to help them to become better adult citizens; others teach them the importance of strong maritime forces. They also study naval history, customs and traditions, seamanship, navigation, and similar subjects which would help their chances for promotion should they decide to join one of the sea services.
The Sea Cadets are permitted to go to sea. After completing recruit training and other required courses of instruction, many Sea Cadets can participate in two weeks advanced training aboard Navy and Coast Guard vessels ranging from small harbor craft to large nuclear powered aircraft carriers.
There is no obligation to join the military. The program intends to teach discipline, accountability, responsibility, honor, courage, and commitment to all young people. These are valuable resources for anyone, and they work just as well in the work place as aboard a ship.
Training and Education
Sea Cadets are exposed to a broad range of subjects designed to develop the whole person, and have many opportunities to participate in hands-on training aboard Navy and Coast Guard ships and on-shore activities, such as survival training and training schools.
Qualifications
First, and most important, you must be physically fit. By that, we mean you must be able to do PT, physical training using the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge. You must complete a physical exam through your local doctor.
A medical examination similar to a high school sports physical is required for all cadet applicants to the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) or Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC). No one will be denied admission to the NSCC/NLCC due to a medical disability. Where a medical condition precludes full, unlimited participation, a Request for Accommodation (NSCADM 015) may be presented by the parent or guardian for review so the cadet may participate in NSCC activities to the maximum extent possible.
You must be willing to work hard, train hard and maintain a “C” average or better in school. We run our unit just like the military, haircuts and all. Males must be close over the ears and neck and not more than 2″ on top. Females must have short hair above their collars or wear it up and under their caps at all times. Prospective Recruits and parents MUST attend the first drill together for an interview. They then become recruits for two more drills before they must make the decision whether or not to join and become a cadet.
