The two sides of the Lagoon..

This evening as I looked out at this beautiful rainbow peeking out from beneath the dark black clouds and watched some Star Grass float by. The beauty and the progress were tempered by someone’s lawn grass and a straw.

It really is up to us.

In this special solo episode of PopHealth Week, host Fred Goldstein, MS, President of Accountable Health LLC, takes listeners on an unexpected journey, from childhood dreams of shark research to a frontline role in restoring one of America's most biodiverse and imperiled waterways: Florida's Indian River Lagoon. Drawing on his population health expertise, Fred applies his proven Population Health Sycle(tm) "Select, Survey, Segment, Sell, Solve, Score, Stop/Start/Same" framework to the 156-mile estuary's ecological crisis, examining harmful algal blooms, cyanobacterial toxins, Alzheimer's-like dolphin pathology, and the public health consequences of degraded blue spaces. With $580 million in civic investment and measurable restoration progress underway, Fred makes a compelling case that healing ecosystems and healing communities require the same evidence-based discipline. Produced by Gregg Anthony Masters, MPH, for Healthcare NOW Radio.

Oyster Update and some good news! Seagrass and Shrimp --- a first!!

Let's start with the good news. Seagrass and Shrimp!! I live across from Ulumay on Sykes Creek, and during the heavy winds yesterday afternoon, there was a bunch of actual Seagrass floating into the canal! Star Grass and I believe Widgeon grass. Check out the pics. There's seagrass somewhere south in Sykes Creek.

Then, when I took out the Oysters this morning. There were two small shrimp in amongst them. First time I have seen either shrimp or seagrass since moving in over 4 years ago!! No seagrass or shrimp were harmed, and all were returned to the water. Given the improved water quality, watching the shrimp dart off was very cool.

The oysters seem to be hanging in there. Some of them are growing, but I'm holding my breath, given last year's results.
