Summer programs are not a luxury for New Hampshire families — they are a lifeline.

As highlighted in a recent New Hampshire Bulletin article, summer learning and out-of-school time programs provide far more than activities for youth. They support working parents, keep young people safe and engaged, and help prevent summer learning loss.

Yet too many families across New Hampshire still struggle to access affordable summer opportunities due to cost, transportation, and limited program availability.

According to new America After 3PM data, 1 in 2 children in New Hampshire are missing out on summer programs.

Summer learning supports:
☀️ Academic growth
☀️ Mental health and belonging
☀️ Working families and local employers
☀️ Career exploration and STEM learning
☀️ Safe, supportive spaces for youth

Investing in summer learning means investing in New Hampshire’s youth, workforce, and future.

When people think about summer in New Hampshire, they often picture camps, swimming, hiking trails, playgrounds, and long afternoons outside with friends. But for many working families, summer brings something else entirely: stress.

☀️ New data shows that parents of 72,834 New Hampshire children want summer programs — but 35,715 kids still don’t have access. That means nearly 1 in 2 children are missing out on summer learning, enrichment, and safe spaces to grow and connect.

Summer programs support kids, families, and communities — and the need is clear. 💛

This week, NHAN represented New Hampshire at the 50 State Afterschool Network Convening, joining statewide afterschool leaders from across the country to strengthen conversations around afterschool, summer learning, and youth opportunities.

NHAN shared the exciting progress, partnerships, and impact happening across New Hampshire while collaborating with peers on strategies to expand access to high-quality Out-of-School Time programs statewide.

Conversations also focused on the ongoing challenges facing OST professionals — including workforce development, funding sustainability, mental health supports, and equitable access — and the importance of continued investment in programs that support youth, families, communities, and New Hampshire’s workforce.

Reminder that in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month… we’re launching something new.

OST Cares is a new pilot focused on supporting youth mental health in Out-of-School time programs—and our Interest Survey is officially OPEN.

This isn’t just another training. It’s a year-long experience that includes:
✨ Monthly trainings
✨ A Community of Practice (real conversations, real support)
✨ Connections to partners like Peers NOT Fears, Connor's Climb Foundation, NAMI
✨ A $500 program stipend to support your participation

We’re looking for a small cohort of OST programs across NH that want to:
✔ Better support youth experiencing stress or behavioral challenges
✔ Strengthen staff wellness and reduce burnout
✔ Build stronger connections to community mental health resources

📅 Program runs: August 2026 – June 2027
