Here at Merrimack End Alz, we want to highlight some key members of the local community dedicating their time to this great cause. So, without further ado, meet our first Featured Fundraiser, Ron Sloane! 💜
Q: What is your connection to Alzheimer’s disease?
A: My dad, Al Sloane, passed away in 2004 after suffering with dementia for a little over 2 yrs. It was a terrible time for him and our family witnessing the memory loss and his health decline. Since his passing I’ve searched for ways to get involved in our community to help others going through similar experiences. I feel so fortunate to have found and become a member of the Knights of Columbus. Through my involvement with the Knights I’ve met some wonderful people with common goals of helping others.
Q: How long have you been involved with the Alzheimer’s Association’s fight to end Alz?
A: Six years ago a brother knight, Bob Bergen, came up with an idea to start a local fundraising activity to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer’s and the fight to end this horrible disease. With the help of a few others we started NH Hot DogZ to End Alz. In five years our community-based fundraiser has raised and donated over $21,000 to Alzheimer’s Association. Four years ago I learned of the Manchester Walk to End Alz and together with the support of my wonderful family and friends started "Team ALDO” in honor of my dad. Our team has raised over $5,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Q: What’s something you wish more people knew about Alzheimer’s disease?
A: Everybody knows someone who has experienced the horrible effects of Alzheimer’s. More than 6 million Americans are currently suffering with this disease. Awareness and fundraising is critical to help scientists find a cure.
Q: What are you doing when you’re not rocking the purple at an Alzheimer’s event?
A: Driving my pontoon boat around Baboosic Lake, enjoying time with my wife Susan and our four kids and their significant others. Life is good.
Special thanks to Ron for his story. If you would like to nominate someone as a Featured Fundraiser, let us know in the comments!
