Can we be honest for a minute?

Autism isn't just about social differences or sensory sensitivities. It's also about emotions that can feel enormous, overwhelming, and incredibly hard to manage.

Affect regulation is something many autistic people struggle with every single day. It's not a choice. It's not bad parenting. It's the brain working differently than what the world expects.

When my kids have big emotional moments, I've learned that the goal isn't to stop the emotion. It's to help them through it. That shift changed everything for us.
If you're parenting an autistic child who seems to "overreact," they're not being dramatic. They're doing the best they can with a brain that feels everything at full volume.

Processing delay.

This one gets misunderstood a lot.

You say something.
They don’t respond.
You repeat it louder.
Still nothing.

It can look like ignoring.
It can look like defiance.

Sometimes it’s just the brain needing more time.
Processing delay means it takes longer to:

Understand what was said.
Figure out what it means.
Decide what to do.
Put words together.

When we rush, we overwhelm.
When we pause, we give their brain space to catch up.
