Today with the help of two of our gardeners, 2 4H students installed birdhouses they built. They were hung in trees near the pollinator garden. Thank you.

Birdhouses can balance backyard ecosystems. Birds can help control unwanted garden pests. Seed-eating birds attracted to the garden assist with native plant seed dispersal. The birds love the service berries, echinacea and black eyed Susan seeds.

The bird houses were built so they can be easily cleaned out at the end of each breeding season. This helps keep returning bird families healthy.

Today we have the help of six young men from the ADA County Sheriffs Labor Detail Program at the Heroes Park Pollinator Project. They are helping to w**d, cut back salvias and yarrow for second blooms in the fall, remove invasive plants, and help create more room for some plants. We have this area planted heavily for the pollinators but also to help suppress w**ds. Our biggest w**d issues are bindw**d and the sedge that fills in everywhere and is a problem in the park. Invasive plants include purple loosestrife which is mostly eradicated and
Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) which can be particularly aggressive and climbs and strangles trees.

Any idea what this plant is?
Trying to ID on my phone it shows coneflower or black eyed Susan’s. It’s not a variety that I’m familiar with. This plant is about 3-4’ tall and just starting to bloom. It has filled in an area thickly so appears to grow more invasively than the coneflowers and black eyed Susan’s that we grow.
