TEN BILLION DOLLARS SOUNDS GOOD, BUT WHAT STAYS IN MERIDIAN?
COQOON 360 HAM™ Blend Community Talk
Now come sit on this porch for a minute, because ten billion dollars sure does sound good when you hear it in a headline. But sometimes you have to slow those big numbers down and really look at what they mean.
The Compass data center project coming to Lauderdale County is expected to represent about ten billion dollars in total investment once everything is built out. That includes the buildings, the equipment, and all that technology that will eventually sit inside those buildings.
But that does not mean Meridian is getting a ten billion dollar check.
The full campus is expected to have eight large data center buildings. Once everything is finished, the estimate is somewhere around 240 to 300 permanent jobs.
So when you hear ten billion dollars, also remember about 300 permanent jobs.
When you do the math, that comes out to roughly 33 million dollars in private investment for every permanent job.
Now let me be clear. That does not mean taxpayers are paying 33 million dollars for every job. It simply shows how much money can be tied up in a data center without needing thousands of people to work inside it.
The first announced tenant is Corderill LLC. That company has committed at least 100 million dollars in equipment and at least 20 direct jobs.
Public records have also connected Corderill with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
That first investment works out to about 5 million dollars in private investment for every direct job.
Now there is some good news in this too.
More than 1,000 workers have been connected to building this campus. That means people working, getting paid, buying gas, eating at local restaurants, staying in hotels, and spending money in our community.
That matters.
But we also have to understand the difference between construction jobs and permanent jobs.
Construction workers build the place.
Permanent workers stay after the building is finished.
That is why the long term number matters.
There is also workforce training happening through Meridian Community College, which gives local people an opportunity to train for some of these jobs.
That is something worth recognizing.
Now we also need to talk about utilities and infrastructure.
We have been told these data centers are being designed in a way that should limit heavy water use for cooling, and that the company will be responsible for much of the electrical infrastructure needed for the project.
That sounds good.
But citizens still have every right to keep watching those numbers after the buildings are up and running.
Then we come to the tax incentives.
These companies can qualify for major tax exemptions and incentives.
What I still want to know, plain and simple, is this.
How much are those tax breaks worth?
How much money will actually come back to Meridian?
How much will Lauderdale County receive?
How much will our schools receive?
How many of those permanent jobs will go to people who already live right here?
What will those jobs pay?
Will local people have a real opportunity to qualify for them?
And when those eight buildings are finished and the construction crews pack up their tools and move on, what will still be left here for the everyday people who call Meridian and Lauderdale County home?
Now understand me.
I am not against progress.
I am not against technology.
I am not against companies coming here and investing.
I want Meridian to grow.
I want Lauderdale County to grow.
I want our people working.
But progress should be something the people can actually see and feel.
If ten billion dollars is coming into our community, then the people ought to be able to understand what is coming back out of that investment for them.
That is not being negative.
That is not complaining.
That is accountability.

H means Hermeneutic.
Do not just read the headline. Understand the whole story behind the numbers.
A means Authority.
Follow the records. Follow the agreements. Follow the tax incentives. Follow the jobs. Follow the money.
M means Message.
Economic development should not just look good on paper. The people living in the community should be able to see the benefit, feel the benefit, and have an opportunity to be part of the benefit.
So yes, celebrate the investment.
Celebrate the workers.
Celebrate the training.
Celebrate progress.
But keep asking one simple question.
When all that money comes to Meridian, how much opportunity stays right here on our side of the porch?
