One photo helped tell the story better than any campaign message.

Last fall, Julie Prior Hayward captured this image of an Inter-Lakes football practice just before the Division III championship game. It was November 19 at 4:41 pm — and the team was practicing under a single portable light as the sun went down.

That picture stayed with many of us. Our students were preparing for a championship while racing the sunset.

Tonight our community chose to change that.

Voters approved lighting for the Charles G. Burrows Memorial Field. This happened because of generous donors, careful work by the school board, and a community willing to come together for its students.

Anyone who has sat through long school board meetings knows that meaningful improvements to our schools don’t happen quickly. They come from patient conversations, thoughtful debate, and people willing to keep showing up until the right solution takes shape.

In the end, we did this for the kids.

Years from now the lights will simply feel like they have always been part of Burrows Field. But last night was the moment our community decided to flip that switch.

Thank you everyone who discussed and participated last night!!!

Who is in for being there when they turn the lights on for the first time?

Thank you to everyone who came out tonight and participated in the discussion and vote. Inter-Lakes has always been a community that cares deeply about its schools. Tonight the district chose to move forward with lighting Charles G. Burrows Field — a project made possible by generous community donors and the support of voters. We’re grateful to everyone who took part.

Anyone who has ever sat through a long school board meeting knows that meaningful improvements to our schools rarely happen quickly. They come from patient conversations, careful listening, and a community willing to show up again and again. Those long evenings are part of how good ideas become real improvements for students. This project followed that same path, and tonight’s vote reflects the dedication of many people who stayed engaged along the way.

Reminder — Tonight at 6 PM

The Inter-Lakes Annual School District Meeting will be held in the Middle High School Auditorium.

Voters from Sandwich, Center Harbor, and Meredith will decide several important articles supporting our students and community — including the proposal to complete field lighting at the Charles G. Burrows Memorial Athletic Field.

Thanks to strong community fundraising, the remaining amount needed is now $133,973 — a one-time investment to install permanent LED lights that will serve our students and community for decades.

This field is used by elementary, middle school, and high school students, along with youth sports programs across the district.

If you are able to attend tonight, your vote matters.

We hope to see you tonight.

I keep picturing the first night the lights come on.

Not the vote.
Not the debate.
Just that moment.

The field goes dim for a breath…
and then it glows.

You hear it before you see it.
Kids yelling.
Parents settling in.
That hum of a crowd that knows something special is happening.

Middle school girls finishing practice without racing the sunset.
A little brother refusing to leave the sideline.
Grandparents staying for one more series.
A senior realizing this is his last season — and he gets one more night.

One campus.
One field.
Generations.

When the turf was built, the conduit for lights was already put in the ground.
This isn’t flashy.
It’s finishing what we started.

The Class of 2027 doesn’t get these years back.
Neither do the classes behind them.

On March 4, we decide whether to flip the switch.

Let’s fill the room.

Lights shine on all.

The February 24 edition of the Laconia Daily Sun includes a thoughtful letter from Geoffrey Burrows of Sandwich.

Geoff is the son of Charles G. Burrows — the founding chair of the Inter-Lakes Cooperative School District in 1963 and the namesake of Burrows Field.

His family represents many generations of families like the Burrows who have attended schools in Sandwich, Center Harbor, and Meredith.

The stone bearing the field’s name came from Beede Academy in Sandwich — one of the oldest schools in our cooperative.

In his letter, Geoff reflects on the original purpose of our district: expanding opportunity for all students.

It is worth the read.

The Annual School District Meeting will be held:

Wednesday, March 4, 2026
6:00 PM
Inter-Lakes Middle High School
Community Auditorium/Gymnasium

Registered voters from Meredith, Center Harbor, and Sandwich are encouraged to attend.
