Our Scouts had two fantastic back to back weekend troop events on the water to start off the new year as a coed Family Troop - Sustainable crabbing on kayaks on the Hood Canal and a sailing skills workshop in Port Townsend. Up next, the Reese Martin Cup Canoe race around Mercer Island!

Hello everyone! It’s been a long time. I still have access to this page and wanted to share. Yosef completed his Eagle Scout Service Project, an informational kiosk for a wildlife sanctuary, over the past week. We got to install the plaque yesterday. It was important for both of us to honor his time in Troop 624 with all of you. You’re still in our thoughts and memories and hope you’re all doing great! Would love to see pictures posted here by others too! ⚜️🦅🇺🇸🚗🚙🛻💦🧼🫧🧽💵👷🏻‍♂️🥽😷🪵✏️📏 🗜️🪚🧰🛠️🔩🪛📐🫟🖌️🪜🪟🌧️☀️🍌🍕🧁🥤🐆🐅🦁🐯🐵🦉🐊🦜🐍🦎🐢🎉👏😅🥳🥹

Troop 624 has won the Reece Martin Canoe Race again! On Sunday, Troop 624 hosted the 27th Annual Reece Martin Cup MI Canoe Race, which goes all around Mercer Island. Congrats to Troop 624 and all the scouts who showed up to race! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success as well, including our Adult Leader, Mike Nystrom, and our 2 Scout Leaders, Milo and Drew! Until next year… 🛶🏆6️⃣2️⃣4️⃣⚜️🛶⚜️🛶⚜️

*This long-lasting tradition is a great opportunity to develop and practice a traditional Scouting skill. It allowed scouts to work as a team, develop leadership skills, overcome challenges, and get into the Scouting spirit.*

If you have any pictures from the race, please share here. Thanks!

Welcome Javier Herrero as Troop 624’s newest Committee Chair (as of last week). Dalia Silverstein had to move to Florida for personal reasons, so luckily he was able to step up for the role. Tonight is the first troop meeting of the year and welcome BBQ. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and having a wonderful 2024-2025 Scouting year! ⚜️🌭🇺🇸

Short post: Congratulations to Bob Bergquist for being nominated for and earning the Lake Trails Territory Paddle / Compass Award 2023, for service and dedication, to Troop 624! Honorable mentions for other Troop 624 Adult Leaders, who are also involved in other Scout groups and received this award: Dalia Silverstein (new Committee Chair for Troop 624 and Crew 4) for Crew 4 and Bryan Urakawa (Troop 624 Chartered Organization Representative and Pack 624 Committee Chair) for Pack 624. Bryan was there in spirit and received his award that Bob is holding later.

Longer post with more information, if you want to read it: This post is super late, not just by time of night, but also because it’s from June 13th. It wasn’t posted initially because I wasn’t sure if I should share about adults on this page and then I felt like it was too late. However, even though we are scout-led, we are also volunteer-ran and couldn’t do what we do without our Adult Leaders. Congratulations to Bob Bergquist for being nominated and earning the Lake Trails Territory Paddle / Compass Award 2023, for service and dedication, to Troop 624! I don’t remember the exact story now, but the paddle and compass are to show the adults helping guide the scouts from the back of the raft. Bob was an amazing Committee Chair for our troop for the past few years and it was well-deserved that he was given this award.

How lucky are we that we have 3 adult leaders winning this award from the council?! Who will win next year? We’re looking for more Adult Leaders and Parent involvement. A survey was sent out to all parents today. Please make sure to fill it out to help improve the troop for everyone. Maybe you’ll win the prestigious paddle / compass award for 2024 and proudly get to display the necklace given to you to wear with your uniform.

Past award winners that I know of who have been involved in Troop 624 in one way or another include: Our former Scoutmaster, Randy Ogata, and Paul Hoeffer. I believe Randy got it for our troop and Paul for Crew 4. If there is anyone else that I missed or this information is incorrect, please let me know by commenting or messaging and I will update this post.

We are happy to announce that Troop 624 had a successful completion to our summer camp at Parsons last week. There were 30 troop in attendance at this camp from many states including Texas, Tennessee, and California. We had 14 scouts and 4 adults who attended from our troop. A total of 41 merit badges were earned by our scouts. Wow! Most importantly, we were awarded "Honor Troop", which is the highest award given to any troop at camp. Way to go Troop 624!

Thank you to all the adults who were in attendance and helped to plan this event. Great work by all the scouts who attended and represented our troop. It was a very hot and dry week, but the scouts toughed it out and finished what they started.

This past Sunday, some of our Scouts showed up at First Hill Park to finish up the work we started last month. May included pruning blackberry bushes, trimming bushes, planting some trees that one of our adult leaders donated, laying down mulch, etc. This last trip included laying more mulch and general park cleanup. We hope the residents close by enjoy the beauty of the park that we fix up each year.

Troop 624 celebrated our troop’s 60th anniversary last night. We had past troop scouters and a handful of past troop Eagle Scouts (we have had 115 Eagle Scouts go through our troop over the past 60 years) attend. It was a great evening! Here’s a picture of our cake, as well as the group of scouts and adult leaders in attendance.
