Mercer Island SafeRides

Mercer Island SafeRides SafeRides offers free and confidential rides home to Mercer Island teenagers on Saturday nights. Li

SafeRides is a student-led program that provides free and confidential safe rides home to youth who find themselves in unsafe situations on Mercer Island on Saturday nights. Volunteers work shifts from 9:30 pm to 1:30 am and will meet at the Covenant church. There are three student roles: dispatcher, navigator, and driver, and there will always be a parent volunteer. Two dispatchers will stay in t

he church and answer calls, and then fill out a call log per each phone call which they will give to the navigator. The driver and navigator will drive to pick up students and drop them off as they call and ask for a ride. Typically only three students are picked up per call and are allowed only one ride per night. Volunteers are able to watch movies and/or study because there is often down-time. Sahara pizza provides free pizza and licorice to volunteers and the driver will be given $20 gas money each week.
