Troop 179 participated in the "Combined Troop" pilot program and is very happy that the option has carried into permanence as a "Family Troop" option and that we can officially be an all gender troop going forward.
While "girls troops" and "boys troops" have worked variably over the years as completely dependent from each other to mostly shared/combined, this option allows for scouts of all genders to join a single troop with one Committee, one Leadership team, and one recharting requirement. This works well for families with different gender children to be able to participate in Scouting all in one place if they choose. Importantly, the options for all-girl and all-boy troops remain for those Scouts and parents who still prefer that format.
Scouting Update in Lake Erie Council ⚜️ In response to a growing need for some of our Scouting families, the National Executive Board has approved a Family Troop option for Scouts BSA, following a successful pilot here in Lake Erie Council.
The “Family Troop” option will become available to all chartering organizations as a third option on December 15th, 2025. Troops will continue to be able to organize as boy troops and girl troops. No unit is required to convert or change its Troop Type. In all cases, the Chartered Organization MUST be part of the discussion and MUST approve any decision to change the Unit Type.
