The Veterans & First Responders Foundation was honored to present the inaugural VFR Howling Heroes Memorial Award to Sgt. Cocanower of the Willoughby Hills Police Department in memory of his beloved K-9 partner, Mya.

Presented by VFR Foundation Founder David Knott and Chief Operating Officer David Kern, this meaningful tribute recognizes the extraordinary bond between a K-9 handler and partner, while honoring Mya’s dedicated service and lasting impact on the community she helped protect.

Mya and Sgt. Cocanower have the distinction of being the first recipients of this special memorial recognition, which will continue as part of the VFR Foundation’s ongoing commitment to honoring the service, sacrifice, and legacy of working K-9 teams across the nation.

At the VFR Foundation, we proudly support First Responders, Veterans, Military Personnel, K-9s, and their families by providing access to critical mental health and wellness resources, including counseling, therapy, trauma-informed support, and wellness programs.

Thank you, Sgt. Cocanower, for your service, and thank you, Mya, for your loyalty, courage, and dedication. Your legacy will never be forgotten.
