Last night in Mayfield Heights, generations of service stood side by side as Mayfield Heights Firefighter Chris Martinitis and his son Nick Martinitis fought a fire together.

There’s an old saying — “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” — and moments like this remind us exactly what it means. The commitment to serve, protect, and sacrifice for others is a legacy that runs deep within families like the Martinitis family.

From all of us at the VFR Foundation, congratulations and job well done to both Chris and Nick. We are proud to celebrate and embrace the legacy of public service and honor the sacrifices made every day by first responders and their families. 🇺🇸🚒

The VFR Foundation’s Resilient Responders Program is built differently — because it is designed specifically for first responders by people who truly understand the profession.

Responders recently participated in an orientation led by Master Hotchkiss, owner of Kang Do Kwan Martial Arts Institute and a police officer himself. Even more impactful, additional instructors and staff involved in the program are also first responders.

That real-world experience creates an environment built on trust, communication, discipline, resilience, and understanding. Having real responders mentoring and training real responders provides a level of connection and support that simply cannot be replicated.

This program is tailored specifically to help responders strengthen both their physical and mental wellness while developing tools that can benefit them throughout their careers and personal lives.

There is truly nothing else like this in Northeast Ohio. The Resilient Responders Program is creating meaningful opportunities for the responder community through leadership, mentorship, confidence-building, and long-term wellness support.

Every journey starts with a first step — and today we are proud to recognize a responder beginning his very first class through the VFR Foundation’s Resilient Responders Program at Kang Do Kwan Martial Arts Institute.

Adding this program into a responder’s daily life is about more than training. It is about building confidence, discipline, resilience, focus, and mental strength that will help set him up to succeed throughout his future career and beyond.

The challenges first responders face require both physical and mental toughness, and we are honored to help provide tools that support long-term wellness and personal growth.

EVERY JOURNEY STARTS WITH A FIRST STEP

This week, we welcomed several first responders to their very first Resilient Responders Martial Arts class at Kang Do Won.

Walking through the door is often the hardest part — but these men and women showed up ready to invest in themselves, their health, and their resilience.

Through this program, first responders gain more than self-defense training. They build confidence, mental toughness, stress-management skills, and a strong community of support alongside others who understand the pressures of the job.

We are honored to stand beside those who serve our communities every day.

Today we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country and communities.

At the VFR Foundation, Memorial Day is also a time to recognize the sacrifices made by our first responder families — those who continue to answer the call while carrying the weight of loss, trauma, and service.

We remember the fallen.
We support the living.
And we continue our mission to serve those who serve us.
