There is a county in Texas with fewer people in it than most high school graduating classes. The 2020 census counted 64. 🌵

Loving County sits up against the New Mexico line in the far reaches of the Permian Basin, and its county seat, Mentone, is the only town in it. There is no bank, no school, no doctor, no hospital, and no cemetery — residents who die are buried in other counties. Children ride to school in Wink, more than twenty miles away. The county was organized, abandoned, and then organized again in 1931, and it has been near the bottom of the national population list ever since. Thousands of oil workers pass through it daily for their shifts, and almost none of them live there.

It is the emptiest county in the United States, and it sits on top of some of the most valuable oil ground in the world. Texas contains both of those facts at the same time without any apparent difficulty.

This tiny Texas town sits in the least populated county in America… and somehow people still call it home. In the middle of endless West Texas desert, Mentone survived while entire boomtowns disappeared. But the strange part is… oil was everywhere around it. Follow if you’re fascinated by forgotten places most people never notice. Official records say Loving County has had fewer residents than some city apartment buildings, yet families stayed here for generations. Long empty highways. Tiny schools. One courthouse surrounded by miles of silence. Outsiders thought the oil boom would transform Mentone into another wealthy Texas town. But here’s what people don’t realize… the money often passed straight through. Pumpjacks kept moving in the distance while small businesses faded and buildings sat abandoned under the desert sun. Some accounts claim entire stretches of road could feel almost untouched for hours. At sunset, the town looks frozen in time… cracked earth, faded signs, and a few homes surrounded by hundreds of miles of emptiness. And even now, people still live there… holding onto a place most of America forgot.
