Earlier this week, 22 employees from WESTconsin Credit Union rolled up their sleeves at Landmark’s Elk Creek Bottoms Preserve for their Community CARE Day!

Working along the lower trail to the confluence of Elk Creek and the Chippewa River, volunteers removed invasive buckthorn and honeysuckle to help restore native habitat and support biodiversity!

Thank you, WESTconsin, for spending the morning outdoors with us and making a positive impact on this special preserve. We appreciate your partnership!

Hear about the collaborative effort that made its protection possible, past and future uses, and the importance of this conserved land for wildlife habitat and water quality. Great news for outdoor enthusiasts and trail users in the Chippewa Valley! 🚴🌿

Landmark Conservancy has purchased 100 acres from Xcel Energy Wisconsin to protect a 6.5-mile section of the Chippewa River State Trail in Dunn and Pepin Counties. This 30-mile trail extends from downtown Eau Claire and travels south along the Chippewa River through a variety of habitats, joins the Red Cedar State Trail in the Dunnville Wildlife Area, and ends at the town of Durand. This important corridor will now remain protected for future generations! Landmark will convey the land to the respective counties later this fall.

Xcel Energy was willing to sell the property below appraised value, and Landmark secured grant funding from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for the full purchase amount. Landmark staff time for this project was supported in part by grants from Explore Menomonie and the ROTARY CLUB OF MENOMONIE.

Last Saturday, our Executive Director joined Dean Edlin from the Wisconsin DNR to lead a Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin field trip at Maiden Rock Bluff State Natural Area.

Participants enjoyed views of Lake Pepin while learning about the decades of habitat management that support the area's unique birds, snakes, pollinators, and native plants. Landmark Conservancy has helped permanently protect more than 500 contiguous acres here through three land protection projects.

Thanks to Old National Bank Bayfield staff who helped spread gravel on the Brownstone Trail and re-stain the kiosk at the trailhead last week. This was part of Old National Bank’s “Better Together Days” — an annual company-wide volunteer event where team members step away from their regular work duties to serve local nonprofit organizations and community projects. The Bayfield staff team chose to help steward a site that is part of the Bayfield Area Trails network. Thank you! 🫶🏼

Thanks to the Menomonie Area Chamber & Visitor Center Leadership Menomonie cohort for inviting Landmark to be part of their day that focused on learning about local agriculture, environment, and natural resources! We toured Keil Birch Creek Preserve to see firsthand the importance of keeping land in its natural state and the public benefits of permanent land protection.

It was a beautiful day for seed collecting at last week's volunteer workday with the DNR at Maiden Rock Bluff SNA! Thanks to the volunteers who helped collect seed to expand native tall grass prairie habitat onto the adjacent protected property. We also enjoyed catching up with Dalton, who served as Landmark's Seasonal Stewardship Technician for the past two summers and is now working with the DNR. 🌾

Last Friday and Saturday, volunteers showed up to help make the newly protected Maxwell Forest property a more welcoming place! As the previous owner, Northland College’s students and faculty built a trail system, but it needed some care. Volunteers helped remove components of an old challenge course, clean the small observatory, re-position trail boardwalk, and clear brush. Thanks to volunteers, the property now has a much more inviting trail that will help visitors enjoy a variety of non-motorized recreational activities! A round of applause to our amazing volunteers! 👏🌲

This workday was organized in partnership with Bayfield Area Trails and Bayfield County Government Forestry staff.
