What have you discovered on your nature outings lately? 🌿 🍄‍🟫🐍

While visiting a protected property near Spider Lake in Hayward, our Stewardship Specialist Tommy captured photos of a garter snake, a bright orange Jack-o'-Lantern mushroom (which can glow in the dark!), and blooming large-leaved aster.

After more than 50 years of stewarding their property on the Yellow River, Bob and Leigh Waggoner have protected 110 acres forever through a life estate donation to Landmark Conservancy! Located southwest of Spooner, this land borders the 708-acre DNR Sawyer Creek Fishery Area. The property will remain private until the life estate expires. At that time, Landmark Conservancy plans to open the property to the public for nature appreciation and low-impact recreational use, ensuring future generations can experience and value the natural character of the Yellow River landscape.

🌲 🎉We’re proud to share that a 132-acre forest located a few miles south of Ashland on the White River has been protected! Known locally as the Maxwell Forest, the property was formerly owned by Northland College. Students and faculty gathered for decades among the majestic pines to engage in environmental learning, research, and outdoor education. This project not only conserves important wildlife habitat and water resources, but also carries forward Northland College's environmental legacy.
Over the past year, Landmark staff has been negotiating with Northland College’s Board of Trustees while securing support from Ashland County, Bayfield County, the local townships, and funding partners. Landmark transferred the property to Bayfield County, with the goal that it will become part of the state’s fishery area.

Today we joined Beaver Creek Reserve's Master Naturalist in Training Program to talk about the role of land trusts and the work of Landmark Conservancy. We explored a prairie on a conservation easement property and caught some butterflies to observe! 🦋🦋🦋
