Last Friday our Seasonal Stewardship Technician Dalton attended the Northwest Lakes Conference in Hayward! He enjoyed the opportunity to engage with others interested in protecting our water resources, shared the value of permanent land protection to participants, and listened to excellent presentations related to freshwater ecology in our part of the state - including topics of dragonflies, mussels, sturgeon, and incorporating indigenous knowledge into management decisions.

We are soaking up all the summer blooms! This is white wild indigo, a long-lived native prairie plant with a unique structure and white, pea-like flowers. It is highly beneficial for pollinators. As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it naturally improves soil health.

We got wet... we got dirty... but we removed a lot invasive sweet clover from the remnant prairie at Maiden Rock Bluff State Natural Area yesterday! Thanks to the DNR and hardy volunteers who worked in the rain and on steep slopes all morning. We were rewarded with views of Lake Pepin and blooming prairie plants! We’re grateful for everyone who continues to help protect this special place! 💚

When a Karner blue butterfly lands on your arm, it's a good day! 💜

Pictured here is Landmark's Advancement Director Kristin while visiting a conservation easement property that supports Karner blue butterflies - a federally endangered species that relies on wild lupine as its host plant. Adult females lay their eggs directly on lupine leaves, and when the caterpillars hatch, they feed exclusively on this plant.

These butterflies thrive in open barrens, savannas, and prairies, making habitat protection essential for their survival. 🦋
