Last post I promise.

Today we visited the Born to Learn Academy in Moshi, TZ. Starting at age three, these students are taught valuable life skills. We were truly impressed.

Today we tested 333 students, teachers and locals and distributed 241 glasses. The children were adorable. Tonight the US team heads home but the TZ team will remain to test the 700+ students we did not have time for today.

I am thrilled to report that during the six clinics the US team participated in, we tested a total of 1856 people and distributed 1628 glasses. Changing futures. Changing lives.

Thanks so much for following us on this journey.

I’ll only mention it once because I hate doing it. If you’d like to support our efforts, please visit our website at https://www.SKYGENfoundation.org or contact me. A pair of glasses costs us $5. Thank you.

Our second day in Arusha was crazy good.

It took our team of 14 people ten hours to screen 375 people and distribute 344 pairs of glasses. Unfortunately we did have to turn people away. We wish we could stay longer but we are scheduled to travel to Moshi to screen students at a related school ok Monday. We will come back.

It was a wonderful day. Experiences like this make you realize the things that are important. Once again, thank you to our partners that helped make the possible including Albwardy Investments.

Our first day in Tanzania was so much better than expected.

Due to the recent unrest and lockdowns in the country, we were fearful of a low turnout. Instead we had so many we had to ask people to come back tomorrow.

We tested 274 people and 240 required and received glasses. Our thanks to Gran Melia and Albwardy Investments for supporting us for these clinics.

I’d like to share the flow at our clinics with some pictures.

People arrive and are seen in the order they arrive. First they receive an acuity test. We then use our portable auto refractor to determine their individual prescription. Next the optometrists use the phoropter and test lens to finalize the prescription. Finally each person picks out their frame of choice and we pop in the lenses according to their individual prescription.

We back again Saturday in Arusha, then will travel to Moshi on Sunday.

Thanks to everyone for the support and kind words for my fantastic team.

Hey folks I’m back

Our last day in Kenya was fantastic.

The turnout again required us to ask people to come back tomorrow (our regular Kenyan team will handle the next two days).

In total we tested 328 people and distribution 307 pairs of glasses - all built to their exact prescription!

So while we were involved in the clinics we distributed 804 pairs of glasses in just three days. With two days left to go it should be a banner week for the Kenyan team!!!

So proud of all of our team members.

Tomorrow we head to Tanzania. We’re hoping the political unrest is settling down so our clinics on Friday and Saturday will be successful and safe.

Our thanks the the Kenyan Society for the Blind and One Sight/Essilor for partnering with us this week

Thanks for your support as we work to change futures.

What a day! I knew more would come but we actually got to the point where we had to ask people to come back tomorrow!
Today we saw 343 people. Of those, 319 had their vision tested (we also do wellness screenings). Today a total of 296 received glasses. Think about, my team made 296 people’s lives better!
I’ve attached some pictures for you.
Thanks for your support. 💕

Tensions in Tanzania led to a revised itinerary and added about 12 hours of travel time, but our first day of clinics definitely made it all worth it.
Today we tested 228 and distributed 200 pairs of glasses. This is significant because the first day is generally the slow day. We get more people each day as word spreads.
Can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings.
So proud of our team who worked hard all day.

Before our first trip to Tanzania in 2018, we did not imagine a full-time, local team going out daily for clinics, especially not in two countries. Then we saw the crowds come to those first clinics, and we had to turn some away because it got too dark. We saw the need and the deep gratitude for something so simple for us to do. We had to expand and reach more people.

In seven short years we’ve staffed a local team to continue our mobile vision clinics, formed partnerships to add permanent clinic locations, expanded our program into Kenya, added oral health outreach, and increased our focus on vision care for students. To date we’ve provided 314,000 vision tests and almost 93,000 pairs of glasses. Oral health outreach to 517,650. Visited 784 schools.

These are big milestones, but it’s not about the number. It’s about people we’ve helped. Kids are doing better in school because they can see the board and they are enjoying life more because poor vision is not limiting their horizon. Adults are better able to do their jobs, see the road, read their bible and, again, enjoy life. Without exception, every person I’ve seen get a pair of glasses walks out with a big smile and is filled with gratitude.

These milestones belong to the people who’ve let us into their lives, the partners who stand with us, and the people who continue to support our mission. When people can see, it changes everything. Thank you to you all! Learn more and support our mission: https://www.skygenfoundation.org/

Last day for the US team in Arusha was a great success.
We vision tested 218 people, provided 178 with glasses made to their prescription today and will provide custom glasses to 12 more. Overall total for the trip was 1138 vision tests and 1013 pairs of free glasses to those in need.
In addition, we provide dental screening to 210 people referring 117 cases of periodontal disease and 68 cases of caries.
We now leave the work to our outstanding teams in Tanzania and Kenya who work every day to provide services to the underserved.
I’ve attached some pictures of the happy recipients.
Thanks for watching the progress of our trip this year. If you’re interested in learning more or supporting our efforts please talk to me visit our website at skygenfoundation.org. (honestly no pressure whatsoever)
I can’t tell you how much I love doing this.

Second day in Arusha was a big success. The MCT provided 201 dental screenings, provided dental education and gave away 201 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste.
The vision team provided 203 vision tests, sent 179 home with their new glasses made to their prescription and another 22 pairs of custom made (higher Rx) glasses being made for others.
This was done despite having no electricity. The mining head light came in handy.
We ran into Packer and Badger fans too. How great is that?

Today we began three days of clinics at Oturmet District Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania. Working with our team of fellows from Miracle Corners Tanzania we provided dental and vision tests for 205 people and 175 left with glasses made to their prescription. Another 17 will be receiving custom made glasses in the near future. It was such an awesome team and our team is the best. Thanks to everyone for your support.

Today started with meetings with meetings with Essilor, the Kenyan Society for the Blind and the Director of Programs from Machakos County Health Services discussing ongoing and future opportunities.
We then headed up the mountain for our last day in Kenya.
We tested 207 people and distributed 191 pairs of glasses. It was another very rewarding day. The team did a fantastic time.
Off to Arusha, Tanzania tomorrow. Clinics kick in again Thursday.
