Innovate Public Schools

Innovate Public Schools We are dedicated to building the capacity of parents and families to organize, advocate, and demand high quality schools for their children.

We believe that the education system was not designed to serve all children, and that the biggest barrier to all children having access to an excellent school is a lack of political will to improve the system. We believe the voices and experiences of parents, families, and students should be elevated and centered in decisions about education.

Right now, the Los Angeles Unified School District is developing a new strategic plan that will cover how the district will drive student success in 2026-2030. We are proud to share that Innovate is once again partnering with LAUSD to develop the Family Guide to the Strategic Plan!

The Family Guide helps parents and families understand the Strategic Plan and have conversations with schools and the district about how the plan is being implemented.

To create the Family Guide, Innovate is co-facilitating a series of focus groups with LAUSD’s Office of Family Engagement and families across the district.

Did you know that the Department of Education may be illegally dismantled?

That's why we're kicking off 2026 by joining more than 1,000 parents and educators, 225 state and local groups, and more than 100 national organizations who signed a national letter urging Congress to protect the lawful role of the U.S. Department of Education.

A strong federal backstop is essential to ensuring students receive the services they deserve and that parents have a clear path to decision-makers. From classrooms to Congress, our mission is to bring parents closer to power so they can drive better outcomes for their kids.

This moment makes that mission more urgent than ever.

We are proud to stand in partnership with National Equity Project, All4Ed, EdTrust-West, The Education Trust, Educators for Excellence, The California Afterschool Advocacy Alliance - CA3, CA AfterSchool Network, Californians Together, Disability Rights California, Families In Schools, Partnership for Children and Youth, Public Advocates, the San Francisco Parent Coalition, and so many others standing up for a high-quality public education for all.

At Innovate Public Schools, our work starts with a simple belief: parents are the experts on their children, and they deserve a real seat at the table where decisions about education are made at the school, district, state, and national levels. That belief is why Innovate joined more than 1,000 pare...

For the first time, Innovate Public Schools analyzed every one of California’s 9,158 public schools to identify those closing opportunity gaps for Black and Latino students.

The findings from our new Top Schools Report are both inspiring and urgent:

✅ Only 550 schools (6%) made the list
✅ 62% of students at these schools are UC/CSU eligible
✅ 51% are in Los Angeles County
✅ Just 4% are in the Bay Area

At our recent webinar, parents, educators, and advocates reflected on what this means for our communities. Parent leader Roberto Guzman Rivera shared: “Data doesn’t lie. Only through data can we face the hard truths and move forward.”

At Innovate, we believe data is a tool of power, a means for families and communities to hold systems accountable and build the schools our children deserve.

The success of these 550 Top Schools proves that equity and excellence can coexist. Now it’s time to make that the rule, not the exception.

✨ Too many SFUSD students with IEPs aren’t getting the services they’re owed, and families are feeling the impact. With more than 40 open positions in the district’s Special Education Department, parents, educators, and advocates came together yesterday for Families First: Special Education & Solutions in SFUSD to talk about what’s not working and how we can work together to fix it.

From teacher shortages and educator burnout to complex, inaccessible IEPs, the discussion centered on real challenges and real solutions, including an AI-powered tool - AiEP, co-designed by Innovate parents to make IEPs easier to understand and use.

Innovate Parent Leaders, including Roberto Guzman and Noelia Solvel (pictured), shared their stories and questions with Commissioners , , and .

Next up: meeting with ’s new Assistant Superintendent of Special Education to address hiring gaps and strengthen support for students and teachers alike.

Together, we’re working to ensure every child receives the education and services they deserve.
