From our National Co-Chair Charles L. Chavis Jr. “Today the Truth was told and we moved one step closer in the fight for racial healing and Justice. Deeply honored to co-lead the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission alongside Dr. David Fakunle . We are forever grateful to the descendants of Howard Cooper and his story will not be forgotten. “ Maryland Lynching Memorial Project The John Mitchell Jr. Program for History, Justice and Race

On February 28—the last day of Black History Month 2022—supporters of H. Con. Res. 19 (to establish a US Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Commission) and H.R. 40 (to establish a Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans) are joining with the movement for a national call-in day asking President Biden for immediate executive action on these commissions. And they are asking that he signal this intention during the March 1 State of the Union address.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) joined the US Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Movement (TRHT) movement in 2021 and fully supports executive action to create these two, mutually reinforcing commissions. In particular, research libraries support the mission to “properly acknowledge, memorialize, and be a catalyst for progress toward jettisoning the belief in a hierarchy of human value, embracing our common humanity, and permanently eliminating persistent racial inequities.” ARL member institutions are trusted sources of information and data, and curators of the historical and cultural record. Our collections are filled with source material and evidence that can inform and shape a Truth Commission, and we stand ready to contribute our expertise to shaping the envisioned US Archive of Racial and Cultural Healing.

Please consider taking action on Monday, February 28!

Events around racial justice still present themselves in divisive ways including our health care system, rampant racialized policing, the dismantling and suppressing of voting rights. Help and push for the creation of a US TRHT Commission via the US Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Movement
