Swedish Genealogical Society of Minnesota Founded in March of 1983, the society assists people in discovering their Swedish roots and learning about Swedish history, heritage and culture.

Our Society has Swedish and American genealogy reference materials and researchers available to assist families trying to find their Swedish ancestors' families. We have quarterly meetings with programs by knowledgeable lecturers. Check out our events page!

The History & Heritage Book Club will have its first gathering for 2026 on Friday, May 8th from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM. This month's book is "The Emigrants" by Vilhelm Moberg.

From May through December 2026, we will be exploring eight books related to Nordic history and heritage; and Swedish lifestyles and traditions. There are both fiction and non-fiction books; and authors from the United States and Sweden.

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with others in the community who love to read and want to discover some great books!

Den 4 maj firas Star Wars-dagen av fans runt om i världen. Men visste du att Mark Hamill, som spelar Luke Skywalker, har svenska rötter? Mark Hamills morfars far, Sven (Swan) Johnson, föddes i Segutslycke, Osby den 4 juni 1860 och emigrerade till Nordamerika 1876.

Väl framme i det nya landet blev Sven pastor och tjänstgjorde bland annat i St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Minneapolis och St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls. Sven och hans familj finns med på flera ställen i de svenskamerikanska kyrkböcker som finns hos ArkivDigital. Bland annat kan man hitta den här bilden på Sven, hans fru och de fyra äldsta barnen. Sonen som sitter på en gunghäst till vänster om julgranen är Luther Nathaniel som är morfar till Mark Hamill. Den äldre kvinnan är troligtvis Sven Johnsons mamma.
