The Power of the Pivot: Moving "Toward" Instead of "Away"

Ever feel like the harder you try to quit a habit, the more you think about it? 🧠

When we decide to "give something up," our brains naturally hyper-focus on the loss. We feel deprived, and restricted. That mental tug-of-war is exhausting and is often the reason we stop trying altogether.

The secret to sustainable change? Stop running away from the "bad" and start moving toward the "good."

🔄 The Mental Shift
Instead of focusing on what you're losing, shift your perspective to what you are gaining.

The Old Way: "I can't have treats." (Focuses on deprivation and restriction).

The Revitalized Way: "Eating healthier will give me so much more energy to tackle my day." (Focuses on empowerment and vitality).

🚀 Why "Toward" Goals Work Better:
Positive Reinforcement: Your brain responds better to rewards than punishments.
Reduces Resistance: It feels like an invitation rather than a rule.
Sustainability: You aren't just surviving a "dry spell"; you’re building a lifestyle you actually enjoy.

Practical Tip for Today: Take one thing you’ve been trying to "quit" or "cut back on." Reframe it. What is the positive outcome you are moving toward?

Let’s stop focusing on what’s being left behind and start looking forward to who we are becoming.

Something I commonly hear people say is that they are going to avoid or quit something for their mental health. This is a myth that we often believe will help us, but in the end really hurts us. Increasing our capacity to tolerate the unknown, the delayed, the frustration and the anxiety around events will give us so much more opportunity for happiness!

History shows us that even the toughest of walls can come down. 🧱✨

I came across this section of the Berlin Wall, and the message 'Change Your Life' was powerful to me. In counseling, we often work on the 'walls' we've built around ourselves, patterns that keep us stuck or divided from the life we want to lead.

Change isn't just a slogan; it’s a process of dismantling what no longer serves us to make room for something new. Ready to start your own breakthrough? Let’s talk. Schedule an appointment today to start breaking down those walls.
