The senseless violence against law enforcement officers in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and around the nation has caused Americans to feel less safe. Lawless rabble-rousers have contributed to a pervasive attitude of disrespect for law enforcement personnel. The police are treated shamelessly by national media outlets and maligned by radical rants on social media. Worse yet, family members fear for the safety of their loved ones who are called to this noble profession. This lawlessness and violence is not just a big city phenomenon. Officers in both Polk and Montgomery Counties have recently been confronted by gun wielding assailants, and they have responded to these challenges with courage and professionalism. Sadly, violence against officers is not a new phenomenon. On April 29, 1976, a homicidal maniac shot and killed Polk County Deputy Sheriff Bill Lea as he carried out routine duties. In light of these concerns and in memory of the fallen, I believe that it is fitting and proper for our communities to show respect for our law enforcement officers. Accordingly, I, along with others, am planning a Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner in memory of Deputy Bill Lea to honor law enforcement personnel. The dinner will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at the Ouachita Center on the campus of Rich Mountain Community College. A local caterer has agreed to prepare dinner. If adequately funded, this will be a memorable event for law enforcement personnel and their significant others. The event is organized and sponsored by the Lea Memorial Law Enforcement Appreciation Organization and hosted by the employees of the Office of Prosecuting Attorney. We are offering the opportunity for local businesses and individuals to become a part of the event by sponsoring officers. On the files tab is a document of the sponsorships that are available for the Appreciation Dinner and the form to return with your sponsorship. "Back the Blue" sponsorships are limited to individuals only. Please feel free to contact Candace Riner, Event Coordinator, with any questions at 479-747-0115 or email [email protected]. All sponsorship forms and payments must be received by Friday, August 19th. Thank you for your consideration and support!
