SOMETHING NEW: We will be bringing you a COMMEMORATIVE EVENT on this page each month. Members may also get this in their newsletter. We hope to bring you something new that commemorates an event that was important in our history.

THE LEE RESOLUTION

On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee, a 44 year old delegate from Virginia, introduced this resolution in the Second Continental Congress proposing independence for the American colonies.
In the early 1770s, more and more colonists became convinced that the British Parliament intended to take away their freedom. After fighting broke out in Massachusetts in the spring of 1775, the King declared the colonists "in a state of open and avowed rebellion." For the first time, many colonists began to seriously consider cutting ties with Britain.
The colonists elected delegates to attend a Continental Congress that eventually became the governing body of the union during the Revolution. Its second meeting convened in Philadelphia in 1775. The delegates to Congress adopted strict rules of secrecy to protect the cause of American liberty and their own lives. In less than a year, most of the delegates abandoned hope of reconciliation with Britain.
Lee's Resolution read in part "that these united colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states," acting under the instruction of the Virginia Convention. It contained three parts: a declaration of independence, a call to form foreign alliances, and "a plan for confederation."
On June 11, 1776, the Congress appointed three concurrent committees in response to the Lee Resolution: one to draft a declaration of independence, a second to draw up a plan "for forming foreign alliances," and a third to "prepare and digest the form of a confederation."
Because many members of the Congress believed the actions Lee proposed to be premature or wanted instructions from their colonies before voting, approval was deferred until July 2. On that date, Congress adopted the first part (the declaration). The words of the Lee Resolution are echoed in the Declaration of Independence.
TRANSCRIPT: Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.
That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances.
That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation.

One of the ways our chapter contributes within the NSDAR is our promotion of literacy. Two years ago this May, we partnered with the Scott County Historical & Genealogical Society who volunteered to host a Little Free Library at their facility in Waldron. It is maintained by a local DAR member, along with a lovely nearby pollinator garden which serves as a conservation project for us, as well. Even though it is not in Mena, many people regularly visit Fort Smith and can swing by at the half-way point to visit the library which is easily accessible 24/7. We have local people who regularly donate books to us, which we are thrilled to accept. So, if you are traveling north, drop by the LFL. It is located at 125 West Second Street in Waldron right next to the Scott Co. Library, and it is handicapped accessible. Our Charter number is #180692.
If you aren't familiar with Little Free Libraries, take a moment and read up on them. It's quite interesting! "Take a book--Share a book."

Our May chapter meeting was terrific and officially closed another successful and enjoyable year. We have participated in SO many things this last nine months that it's hard to even count, but we received a record number of recognition certificates/awards from the powers that be. Amazing job, Daughters! It's what makes this chapter so much fun to be in because we ARE making a difference in peoples lives and in our community. This month's Service in Seconds was collecting used eyeglasses to donate to the local Lioness Club and we turned in almost 50 pairs. We also installed new board members who have taken over new positions in the chapter. (Please see our previous post for more details.) Our program was unique and so very enjoyable with one of our newest members, Malea, bringing us patriotic music attributed to each American war.
We want to wish everyone a wonderful summer break and don't forget that, even though we may not have meetings, our chapter still participates in events. Watch this FB page and your newsletter! This summer, of course, is the big 250th Birthday celebration for our wonderful U.S.A. Please make an effort to do something special and enjoy this great event. If you do participate in something newsworthy, message us here, along with photos, and we will share it with the chapter.

May has been a busy month for James K. Polk Chapter. We participated in the Pack Shack meal prep event with other community organizations, packing 40,000 meals for Polk County families facing food insecurity. Our chapter also held a memorial service at Old Dallas Cemetery, highlighting one of 49 veterans buried there, as well as placing new flags on each veteran's grave. Next, it was time to set up four Missing Man tables at the following restaurants in Mena: Little Italy; LaVilla; Chopping Block; and Papa's. If you're eating out this weekend, please thank these restaurants for their support. The Missing Man tables honor those men and women who served our great nation and didn't make it home, while acknowledging the loved ones who had to go on without them. We greatly appreciate these four restaurants for their support with this tribute. During our May meeting, members brought in their old eyeglasses to help the Lioness Club. This 'Service In Seconds' project will help the Lioness program donate the gift of better sight to less fortunate communities around the world. Finally, four new officers were installed: Brenda Cunninghan, First Vice Regent; Naomi Putnam, Second Vice Regent; Amanda Page, Treasurer; and Kathy Hagler, Secretary.

CHAPTER DAUGHTERS AND PERSPECTIVE MEMBERS: Don't forget that this Thursday, May 21st, is our last meeting before our summer break. It will be a time to visit with everyone and get our summer plans in order. Our program will be Patriotic Music. SERVICE IN SECONDS: Bring any old eye glasses to donate to the Lioness Club. This is one of the few night meetings so if you usually work a day job, this is your opportunity to attend! Members, please refer to your newsletter for more details. Hope to see you there.

We want to once again recognize the generosity of the ladies in our chapter for going out of their way to make our monthly Service In Seconds outstanding. Earlier in the year we welcomed folks from the Humane Society of the Ouachitas and filled up their vehicle with a large amount of dog and cat products. And just last month, to thank the First Baptist Church for allowing us to meet at their nice facility on 9th Street, we showered them with needed items for the building.
