Organized people are POWERFUL people. 💪🏾 And on 8/28, organized GIVING is POWERFUL because it puts resources behind the people doing the work and the movements creating change.

Here's the deal, Memphis 👇

August 28th is Give 8/28, the national day of giving for Black-led nonprofits and the finale of Black Philanthropy Month. A date with real weight behind it, grief and triumph both.

So when you give to MICAH on 8/28, you're funding work like the fight to move Memphis transit toward the $43.4M our city actually needs. You're funding the leaders, the organizing, the people showing up.

We're Black-led. We're multifaith. We're 99% minority staff. And we bring Memphis together across faith, race, and neighborhood to WIN real change. ✊🏾

Memphis! The biggest day of Black giving lands this month, and for MICAH, it’s about investing in change - not just talking about it. 👇

August is Black Philanthropy Month, founded right here in Memphis in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland. Give 8/28 launched in 2018 as the national day of giving for Black-led nonprofits.

So why 8/28? Because this date carries WEIGHT:
✊🏾 1833: Britain moves to abolish slavery across its empire.
💔 1955: 14-year-old Emmett Till is murdered, and a movement ignites.
🗣️ 1963: 250,000 march on Washington and Dr. King shares his dream.
🇺🇸 2008: Barack Obama becomes the first Black nominee for president.

Grief. Triumph. Courage. Progress. All on one day. 〽️

History doesn't change on its own, Memphis. It changes when people show up and invest in each other. That is the whole spirit of 8/28.

Join MICAH’s Transformational Justice and University of Memphis at First Congo tonight from 5:30 7:30 pm for a Mental Health Awareness Training!

The Mobile University Services for Integrated Community Care (MUSICC) collaborates with community leaders and organizations to provide training to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, particularly serious mental illness (SMI).

Come learn about community based resources and approaches that can be used instead of punitive measures.

For the past six County Commission meetings, from April 27th through July 27th, we have been saying the names of the 68 people who have died in our jail since 2018. Our 13 County Commissioners have heard their names six times. They’ve heard our demands for a better healthcare provider, an ad hoc committee for healthcare provider selection, and diverting those in mental health crisis to Alliance Healthcare before booking. And we need to keep pushing.

One is too many. Sixty-eight is a humanitarian crisis. Everyone deserves to be safe in government custody. Sixty-six of the 68 people were pre-trial. They had not been convicted of anything.

We will be honoring these lives this Saturday, August 1st. Event information is in our bio.

On Saturday, August 1st, Just City — along with Memphis For All, the Justice & Safety Alliance, and MICAH — held a community vigil for the 68 people who have died inside the Shelby County Jail since 2018. More than 100 people attended and walked in silence to the jail to honor their loved ones.

This group of human beings spent a collective 12,517 days at 201 Poplar. That’s roughly 34 combined years of human life locked behind concrete walls — approximately 34 Christmases, 34 birthdays, 34 Mother’s Days, and 34 Father’s Days spent waiting for a day in court that, for far too many, never came. Nearly all were awaiting trial and presumed innocent — more than 90% Black, nearly half in their thirties, more than a third living with a mental health condition.

Whatever brought them there, they still deserved to be alive.

We’ve launched MAKETHEMKNOWN.ORG, a community memorial for the people who died waiting for a day in court that never came. We honor them by standing up for freedom, life, and reason.

Make them known. Make it stop. End jail deaths.

Getting to the ballot box shouldn’t stand between you and your voice. If you need a ride to vote on Election Day, August 6, local partners across the state are ready to help.

1. Call the number for your county to schedule a free ride.
2. Don’t forget your valid Tennessee photo ID.
3. If you’re in line when the polls close, stay in line; you still have the right to vote.
