Meet Ayman Kafel and Elisha “Perk” Perkins.

Ayman survived two civil wars as a kid before his family made it to America.  Then 9/11 happened and he enlisted, deployed to Iraq in 2005, ran over 20,000 miles of combat patrols, and came home to spend the next 20 years as a cop - SWAT, DEA task force, SRT operator.  Still active.  Still on the line.

Perk is a woman who got blown 500 feet out of a gun turret by an IED in the Korengal Valley.  Then became a cop.  Then beat cancer.  Then beat it again.  Three times.  Still standing.  Still fighting.

These are the people I’m bringing to Memphis.

Not consultants.  Not academics.  Not people who read about broken cities in a report.  People who’ve been blown up, shot at, and told they were dying - and kept showing up anyway.

That’s the table we’re building here.

Dangerous men and women.  Good deeds.  That’s the only formula that works.

Wouldn’t trade the life I live today for anything in the world…

I lost a piece of myself on this beach 30 years ago as a young teenager.

I think I found it tonight watching my two youngest kids play in the pacific surf watching the Vandenburg Rocket launch through the California sunset.

Sometimes the only way through it…is through it.

There’s a strange catharsis in going back to the places where you suffered most, reliving it, but building new memories at the same time.
