Seven years ago, Jess and I made a promise to some people on the streets of Memphis that we’d come back for them. We kept it.
Since then we’ve turned drug houses into safe houses, walked with hundreds of people from addiction into recovery, helped build coalitions with prosecutors, judges, task forces, and federal agencies, and spent five years saying out loud that we’d get Memphis off the list of the top five deadliest cities in America.
Today, I’m pretty sure we can say that’s been done.
This photo is from the Pentagon last August, visiting friends while in DC ahead of the formation of the Memphis Safe Task Force. Two recovering addicts covered in tattoos standing at the Department of Defense podium. You can’t make this stuff up.
I’m used to going after big problems, problems way bigger than I have any business tackling, and I’ve learned something about that process - you make big enemies. The Taliban wants me dead. Pakistani ISI supposedly wants me dead. The Russians doxxed our team.
And recent events - a certain island, a certain podcast - have put a fresh target on my back and this time I’m not entirely sure I was ready 🤣.
So, lemme get this out of the way - in writing, with witnesses:
I have no desire to hurt myself. None. I love my life. I love it so much, in fact, that I’m taking a few months off from the mission just to enjoy my kids, my wife, and my businesses. I have nine children, a garage full of project cars, and a long list of reasons to stick around.
I don’t have accidents. I don’t get depressed near balconies. I don’t bathe near toasters. I wear my seatbelt.
We’ll be back. The mission isn’t done. But the next chapter gets written from home.
