On International Day of the Girl (IDG) the global community comes together to celebrate the power of girls and highlight, discuss, and take action to advance the rights of and opportunities for girls everywhere.

We know that each girl has the power to exercise her potential. We recognize the importance of amplifying girls’ voices and advocating for their inclusion in changemaking spaces. By supporting and investing in girls, we can make the world a better place. We celebrate IDG not only to give girls a platform to speak out, but to share girls’ achievements, triumphs, and contributions as we build towards a brighter and more equitable future for girls everywhere.

Today, we lift up Keira A’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, “Peer to Peer,” which empowered high school students to become advocates and leaders in their own school community. Recognizing the need for greater balance between academics and social connection, Keira created a sustainable, student-led club that gives students a voice in planning school events, creating positive social spaces and developing ideas to improve student life. Through events such as a May Day field event, students learned how to identify needs, develop plans, work together and advocate for their ideas with school officials.

Keira’s project demonstrated that students can create meaningful change when given the opportunity to lead. She also helped establish a lasting leadership model in which graduating students pass their experience and responsibilities to the next class, ensuring that Peer to Peer continues beyond her graduation. Through collaboration, problem-solving and perseverance, Keira planted the seeds for a continuing cycle of student leadership and student-led positive change at her school.

Thank you for taking action to advocate for student leadership and involvement in your school, Keira, and for using your voice to enact lasting change!

Girl Scouts Heart of the South celebrates International Day of the Girl - TODAY - October 11, 2026!

By supporting and investing in girls, we can make the world a better place. We celebrate IDG not only to give girls a platform to speak out, but to share girls’ achievements, triumphs, and contributions as we build towards a brighter and more equitable future for girls everywhere.

Today, we lift up Savannah P.’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, “The Reading Retreat,” which addressed early literacy and declining attention spans among students at Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary School. Savannah created an outdoor hammock garden where students can read during library time, providing a fun and inviting environment that motivates them to spend more time reading. The project reached hundreds of students and teachers, with students demonstrating increased enthusiasm for reading, longer periods of focus, and greater excitement about visiting the library. The Reading Retreat continues to serve as an outdoor learning space, with the school librarian and teachers maintaining the hammocks and tracking its impact on reading skills and literacy. Through planning, collaboration and perseverance—including overcoming challenges with utility lines, tree roots and difficult soil—Savannah created a lasting resource that will encourage generations of students to discover the joy of reading.

We celebrate IDG not only to give girls a platform to speak out, but to share girls’ achievements, triumphs, and contributions as we build towards a brighter and more equitable future for girls everywhere.

Today, we lift up Chloe H.’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, “Protecting Women’s Health from Pollution: Understanding Risks and Taking Action,” which raised awareness about the connection between environmental pollution, women’s health and environmental justice. Chloe educated teens, families and community members about how pollution from vehicles, industrial facilities and waste systems can affect health, particularly for women and girls and those living in underserved communities. Through a workshop with Clean Memphis, social media campaigns and community action, she encouraged participants to reduce litter, properly dispose of waste, recycle and participate in neighborhood cleanups.

Chloe measured her project’s impact through pre- and post-surveys and found an approximately 70% increase in participants’ understanding of pollution and its effects on women’s health and low-income communities. Participants also reported plans to take action by recycling more, cleaning up their neighborhoods and sharing what they learned with others. By creating reusable presentations, surveys and social media resources and partnering with Clean Memphis, Chloe established a project that can continue educating and inspiring her community long after her Gold Award is complete.

On Tuesday, October 6, Girl Scouts Heart of the South was proud to present our 2nd Annual Trefoils & Trailblazers Luncheon featuring our outstanding Finding the Power Within Panel. Moderated by Zaneta Lowe of WREG News Channel 3, our panel featured Rose Flenorl of FedEx, Anne Marie Watkins Wallace Peoples of Baptist Memorial Health Care, and Shante Avant of the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis. Their stories and insights showed how leaders across business, healthcare, philanthropy, education, nonprofits, and our community can work together to help every girl thrive.

Inspired by GSUSA’s State of the Girl report, we focused on four ways to support girls: Finding Her Voice, Finding Her People, Finding Her Future and Finding Her Power Within.

The room was filled with wisdom, encouragement, and real-life examples of how each of us can make a difference. Whether we lead a company, serve a neighborhood, mentor a young person, volunteer our time, or simply speak words of encouragement, we all have a role to play in helping girls reach their full potential.

GSHS presented our panelists with our Courage, Confidence, and Character Awards. Their values-driven leadership is a beautiful example of what can happen when we work together to give girls the confidence, support, and opportunities they deserve.

We also celebrated GSHS volunteers, Sally Gillum and Anjelica Hardin Hall, and presented each with the 2026 Promise Award. Thank you for showing us that meaningful change begins with service, commitment, and a belief in what girls can become.

Alexis Waldon, Ambassador Girl Scout from Troop 43008 and 2026 GSHS National Council Delegate, expertly served as emcee for this year's event. Thank you!
