As we celebrate Black History Month 2021, we utilized an icon that was featured in a Harlem Renaissance era literary magazine named, β€œFIRE!!”

The cover artist for this magazine was Aaron Douglas. Douglas pioneered the African-American modernist movement by fusing Art Deco and Art Nouveau with distinct Afrocentric elements. He founded the art department at in Nashville, TN, and taught there until his retirement in 1966.

"I am grateful for Prof. Nikki Arnell, Prof. Cameron Buckley, and Prof. Leslie Parker. Profs. Nikki and Leslie have taught me everything I know about print design and have helped me multiple times with recommendations and support. After graduation, I plan on working with these amazing ladies in AIGA Memphis (a professional design group), and I am very excited for the coming months. Prof. Cameron has always been a cornerstone in my education by being an amazing teacher and personable. He taught my first design tech class where I learned Photoshop, and he helped me finish my studies by leading my Honors Thesis."

As designers, we understand the power of a well-designed and human-centered system to drive health, security and justice in our communities - and to protect and ensure the rights of all people. We are attuned to identifying unethical systems. Systems that exclude individuals or groups, leads to dead ends, anger, and in the most monstrous cases, the consistent loss of life from historically abused and disenfranchised communities.
