Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy

Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy Serving people with disabilities and hardship throughout the Mid-South since 2015

Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy's mission is to serve individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities and hardship by providing equine-assisted services to empower, inspire, nurture and succeed. In the greater Memphis area, there are 322,690 residents with disabilities age 5-64 who have the opportunity to benefit from equine-assisted services offered by Southern Reins Cen

ter for Equine Therapy. We are the only equestrian facility in the area that exclusively serves individuals with disabilities and hardship in our community. We have adapted the traditional approaches of working with and learning about horses so that our participants can feel the wonder of the connection between horse and human. The positive change we see in and out of the arena drives our passion to celebrate the ABILITY of each of our participants. Working with horses, our program offers children and adults a unique combination of sport, recreation and education in a safe and nurturing environment. Participants are able to turn struggle into success as they build strength, develop confidence, and learn riding skills that translate to improvements in their overall quality of life.

June is PTSD Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and deepen understanding of the many ways post-traumatic stress disorder impacts individuals in their everyday lives.

At Southern Reins, we are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment where healing and growth can take place across all of our programs. Through meaningful interactions with horses, participants of all ages and backgrounds are supported in building confidence, connection, emotional regulation, and trust.

Healing is not one-size-fits-all, but no one has to face it alone. We are honored to walk alongside those we serve and support each step forward. To learn more, visit www.southernreins.org/programs.

Camp is in full swing and we are having a blast! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿด

This week, we are proud to welcome campers from the YMCA of Memphis Summer Camp program as they visit Southern Reins for a fun-filled field trip experience. With nearly 1,000 campers joining us throughout the week, our farm has been buzzing with excitement. From scavenger hunts and horse interactions to arts and crafts and games, it has been incredible to see so much joy, curiosity, and connection in action.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers who have already jumped in to help and to those who will be joining us throughout the rest of the week. We are so grateful for the time, energy, and heart you bring!

Ten years of impact. One mission that continues to grow. Check out the milestones, moments, and impact that shaped the last 10 years. . .

What started as a vision has become a place where strength is built, confidence is discovered, and lives are changed every single day. Over the past decade, Southern Reins has served countless individuals and families in our community living with disabilities and hardship through equine-assisted programs and meaningful connections with our horses.

This timeline is more than milestones. It is a reflection of every donor, supporter, participant, volunteer, horse, and staff member who has made this work possible. Thank you for being part of our story!

Building strength. Growing confidence. Discovering whatโ€™s possible.

At Southern Reins, our programs are designed to meet each individual where they are. Through Occupational Therapy incorporating Hippotherapy, patients work on physical and sensory development, while Adaptive Riding lessons help participants build independence, connection, and confidence.

Each experience plays a meaningful role in every journey.

๐ŸŒŸ June Participant Spotlight ๐ŸŒŸ

This month, we are excited to celebrate Michael Bennett! Michael is a proud University of Memphis graduate who joined Southern Reins in 2024 through our HorsePOWER Work-Based Learning program. Since the very beginning, he has grown in confidence, built meaningful job skills, and become an important part of our community. Through HorsePOWER, Michael met his favorite horse, Atlas, and began participating in our Adaptive Riding program in January 2026.

One of Michaelโ€™s favorite parts of riding is learning how to clearly communicate with Atlas as they navigate obstacle courses together. Watching that partnership grow has been something truly special. Outside of the arena, Michael enjoys building Legos and working toward his creative goal of writing a book of riding songs.

We are so grateful to have Michael as part of the Southern Reins family and are proud to celebrate him this month!
