Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy

Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy Serving people with disabilities and hardship throughout the Mid-South since 2015

Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy's mission is to serve individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities and hardship by providing equine-assisted services to empower, inspire, nurture and succeed. In the greater Memphis area, there are 322,690 residents with disabilities age 5-64 who have the opportunity to benefit from equine-assisted services offered by Southern Reins Cen

ter for Equine Therapy. We are the only equestrian facility in the area that exclusively serves individuals with disabilities and hardship in our community. We have adapted the traditional approaches of working with and learning about horses so that our participants can feel the wonder of the connection between horse and human. The positive change we see in and out of the arena drives our passion to celebrate the ABILITY of each of our participants. Working with horses, our program offers children and adults a unique combination of sport, recreation and education in a safe and nurturing environment. Participants are able to turn struggle into success as they build strength, develop confidence, and learn riding skills that translate to improvements in their overall quality of life.

🇺🇸 We were honored to be part of an important day for Memphis veterans!

Last Friday, Jill and Lizzie attended the opening of the new Tunnel to Towers Foundation Veterans Village in Memphis. Through our PATH International Equine Services for Heroes program, we have the privilege of serving veterans in our community, making this new village especially meaningful to us.

We are proud to stand with those who have served and are excited about the opportunities ahead to collaborate and support the veterans who call this community home. 🇺🇸🐴

Happy National Nonprofit Day! 💛

At Southern Reins, we believe in the power of the horse to create connection, build confidence, and open doors to new possibilities.

But our mission does not happen because of horses alone. It happens because of the incredible community that surrounds them.

Our donors. Our participants and their families. Our volunteers. Our sponsors, community partners, and supporters.

Every lesson, every breakthrough, every smile, and every milestone is made possible by people who believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to grow, connect, and thrive.

Today, we are celebrating our nonprofit community and everyone who helps make Southern Reins what it is. Thank you for being part of our herd. 🐴💛

🐴 Ace has one question . . . GOT HAY?

Because therapy horses don't run on hugs alone.

A gift of $25 feeds our entire therapy herd for one day, keeping Ace and all his friends healthy, happy, and ready for every participant who counts on them.

Want to make an even bigger impact? Sponsor a week. A month. Or as many days of hay as you would like! Every bale helps keep our horses fueled for the life-changing work they do. https://bit.ly/4wMftH6

Because it turns out changing lives starts with hay snacks.

Please join us in welcoming Southern Reins' new Donor Relations and Volunteer Coordinator, Mary Helen Willingham!

Mary Helen was born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi. Growing up on her family farm, she was surrounded by animals of all kinds, usually including at least one horse. This instilled in her a deep love and respect for the important role each animal plays in our lives. After graduating from Millsaps College with a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology, Mary Helen worked in several social service fields before beginning a long career in dental office management. After relocating to Memphis in 2024, she realized that working in a meaningful, mission-driven organization was what had been missing from her professional life. She joined Southern Reins in 2026 and is excited to share the organization's mission and values.

Outside of the office, Mary Helen enjoys spending time with her husband, Alex, and their two sons, Jacob and Thomas. She also stays busy caring for her own herd of dogs and cats, including her St. Bernards, Bear and Bryant.
