Does Memphis need more pathways to graduation?

Opportunity Youth Academy is a proposed public charter high school in Frayser designed to serve students ages 16–21 in grades 9–12, particularly young people who have become disconnected from traditional school settings or are at risk of disengaging.

The proposed model would combine a pathway to a high school diploma with individualized academic support, career and technical education, workforce preparation, counseling and case management, and leadership development.

If this sounds like the kind of option your child, family, or community could benefit from, your voice matters.

Join the Tennessee Public Charter School Commission public hearing this Friday, September 18 at 8:30 a.m. and share why Memphis families need additional pathways for young people to earn their diploma and prepare for what comes next.

What is an amicus brief and why did we file one? Simply put, it’s a way for people who aren’t part of a lawsuit to tell the court: “Before you make this decision, you need to hear from us.” And that's exactly what we are doing. The court is being asked to pause the state’s intervention in MSCS. But for families whose children are struggling right now, delay is not neutral. Delay has consequences. In the amicus brief, four parents and grandparents shared their experiences with academics, services for students with disabilities and a system they believe has failed too many children for too long.
