The Green Machine Mobile Food Market

The Green Machine Mobile Food Market The Green Machine is a mobile produce market bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to neighborhoods with limited access to fresh produce in Memphis, TN.

The Green Machine Mobile Food Market, a food access program, launched on July 22, 2013. This mobile market concept grew out of community meetings with residents of a low income downtown neighborhood who identified access to fresh, healthy produce in their neighborhoods as one of their greatest needs and desires. Inspired by the ideas, St. Patrick Community Outreach, Inc., with its years of experie

nce in the community and commitment to addressing food access, stepped up to the challenge. Many wonderful organizations have jumped on board since! Help Memphis build equitable food access in our local food deserts, and get this bus rolling! Every dollar and volunteer hour will make Memphians healthy, strong, and proud of our Bluff City.

We regret to announce that our beloved Green Machine Bus which we were renting from the Memphis Transit Authority has been recalled due to it's age. We had been using it for specials events while using a 14 ft. truck for the food ministry. However, we have temporarily suspended operations due to a lack of volunteers needed to load and unload the truck.

Please join us tomorrow, Thursday, February 12th from 5-7pm at St. Patrick's Community Outreach Center at 277 S. Fourth Street, for a public meeting and multi-media presentation on the Vance Avenue Community Transformation Plan.

As you know, the Green Machine Mobile Food Market was born and raised out of this very community plan!

The Vance Avenue Collaborative will be hosting a multi-media presentation of the Vance Avenue Community Transformation Plan on Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the St. Patrick Community Center located at 277 S. Fourth Street (near the intersection of Pontotoc). This resident-generated plan seeks to significantly improve conditions at Foote Homes without displacing its current residents. The presentation will focus on the physical transformation of this historic complex and its grounds; it was prepared by architecture, engineering, and planning students from the University of Catania. So, celebrate Abraham Lincoln's Birthday by showing your support for the residents of Foote Homes and the surrounding Vance Avenue neighborhood.

Green Machine celebrates one year of mobile groceries

Today marks the first anniversary of the Green Machine Mobile Market! Since its launch in 2013, the Green Machine has made more than 600 stops providing more than 15,000 Memphians with lower incomes living in so-called food deserts with access to high quality fruits and vegetables.

Thank you for your patronage, support and partnership, cheering-on, and for spreading the word about the Green Machine in its first year! We are looking forward to another fruitful (and vegetable-ful) year ahead!

Dear Friends,

This week marks the six-month anniversary of The Green Machine! On behalf of all those who have contributed their time and fortune to support this important new service; we want to express our deepest appreciation!

With the help of many individuals and institutions, the Green Machine has been able to make 430 stops in order to serve more than 6,000 poor and working-class Memphians living in neighborhoods without full-service food stores!

In the coming months, we hope to expand The Green Machine's health and wellness education programs. As the weather warms up a bit, we will also be sponsoring a series of food preparation demonstrations to introduce families to delicious meals made from fresh fruits and vegetables available on The Green Machine.

We are also investigating how we might assist residents of the Vance, Downtown, and South Main neighborhoods to establish a cooperatively-owned food store. A slide show featuring the highlights of our preliminary research into this topic appears on this page - we welcome your feedback on this project!

With warm regards,

The Green Machine Planning Team

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that we report the loss of one of The Green Machine's most important supporters - David Carter of Easy-Way Stores Inc. When the idea for the Green Machine was in its infancy, David approached St. Patrick's offering to help us transform our idea into reality. For the past two years, he, his family, and staff worked tirelessly to help us deliver high quality fruits and vegetables to residents of our city's poorest neighborhoods.

Since we launched The Green Machine on July 22nd, David and his son personally stocked our bus early each morning! In addition to providing us with great fruits, vegetables, and dried goods at rock bottom prices, David and his family shared their knowledge of the produce business with us and passion for serving the public. They helped us develop our business plan, marketing strategies, bus retrofitting, and staff training. they even provided us with a home for the Green Machine at their Mendelhall facility.

Without David's personal involvement in The Green Machine, we would not have been able to serve more than 6,000 individuals living in food deserts during the past six months. David was a committed family man, talented businessman, and generous and quiet supporter of community projects. As people of faith, we know David is in a better place! However, we will deeply miss his leadership, warmth, and good humor.

While we explore an appropriate way to honor David and the Carter family's commitment to our city; we promise to do our best to keep improving The Green Machine - one of the many community projects close to David's heart!

Respectfully posted,
