This week the Southern Baptist Convention voted to advance an amendment that would bar churches affirming women in the office or function of pastor from cooperation with the denomination.
To my sisters called to Pastor, and to every woman wrestling with what this means for her, hear me clearly.
We women Pastors do not need to defend our call to Pastor, and we do not require validation from human men. When God calls a woman to shepherd His people, that is a boardroom conversation between the called and the Commander in Chief Himself. No human council convenes that meeting, and no human vote can adjourn it.
The prophet Jeremiah was told, "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5).
A call to shepherd that precedes the womb does not await the approval of a convention floor.
When the apostles were ordered by the religious authorities of their day to be silent, they answered plainly:
"We must obey God rather than any human authority" (Acts 5:29). That has always been the posture of the called. Peter and John asked their accusers,
"Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?" (Acts 4:19). We ask the same.
We stand on the promise that "There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28).
And we remember that the Lord Himself appoints shepherds for His flock: "And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will guide you with knowledge and understanding" (Jeremiah 3:15). He did not stipulate their gender — He claimed their hearts.
So let it be settled. We will not defend our call to Pastor. We will obey it. And we challenge every woman of every denomination called to the pastorate to do the very thing God compels her to do, in season and out, "for who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this" (Esther 4:14).
To every woman who feels the weight of this moment, you do not have to walk it alone. We invite you to join the National Coalition of Women in Ministry, where your calling is embraced, supported, and developed alongside sisters who understand the road. Come stand with us at ncwim.org.
We answer to the One who called us to shepherd His people. If God is for us, who can ever be against us? (Romans 8:31).
