By the mid-1990s Lauryn Hill emerged as one of the most influential artists of the hip-hop era. By the age of 13 she was already performing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. In 1998 her album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, sold one million copies in one month. See her story and hear her biggest hit here: https://www.blackpast.org/african-american-history/lauryn-noelle-hill-1975/.

Be Honest With God

The greatest blessing of giving is not on the financial side of the ledger but on the spiritual side. You receive a sense of being honest with God. You receive a consciousness that you are in partnership with God—that you are doing something constructive—that you are working with Him to reach the world . You are also enabled to hold on to this world’s goods loosely because the eternal values are always in view. How do you give? Is it liberally and cheerfully? Or is it sparingly and grudgingly? If you have been giving God the leftovers of your substance and your life, you have been missing the true joy and blessing of giving and living.

A BETTER PERSPECTIVE

Most people view the world through eyes that see only what is happening right now. And the result of this self-absorbed, impatient mindset? Not very pretty to look at. We end up with an embarrassing episode like the one cited above: Esau forfeiting enormous privilege and honor, essentially throwing away his prominent place in the eternal purposes of God. And for what? A bowl of stew. How tragic!
However, throughout the Bible, we read of many of God’s faithful servants who had a different perspective than Esau’s. Rather than becoming obsessed with the small stories of their individual lives, they focused on God’s big story. As they did, these worshiping saints remembered the past faithfulness of God, even as they placed their hope in his future promises.
The result is that these people lived steadier lives. They were not susceptible to baser impulses. Because they kept the big picture in view, they finished well.
What are you living for today? When you focus on the present and on your feelings, you can quickly lose sight of God’s future and his truth. To put your hope and trust in God is to stand in awe of him and his power with the confidence that God will faithfully perform his Word.

Gracious Father, keep me from the foolish trap of . . .

“Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

God Gives You Unearthly Patience

Why does it seem that trouble always rears its head just when we start to make real progress? And why do so many difficulties linger for what seems an eternity?

Why are some people so annoying? And what recourse do we have when we can’t swap the irritating folks in our lives — family members, co-workers, neighbors — for a more congenial bunch?

When we’re in these kinds of situations, when we’re feeling stuck, restless and unable to change anything, we need the miracle of God’s patience.

The word the apostle Paul uses here — forbearance — is a word that means endurance, patience or perseverance. This is the quality of being long-suffering.

The next time circumstances put you in an unpleasant “holding pattern,” the next time an annoying person pushes your buttons, relinquish control of the situation and your own emotions and offer it to the One who has an endless supply of patience. The results really are miraculous.

God’s Promise to Me

*Those controlled by my Spirit can experience unearthly patience.

My Prayer to God

I want to know your patience, Lord. Forgive me for getting irritated with situations and people. I want to be even-keeled. I want to be willing to wait for you no matter how long it takes.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

The Best Way to Begin in Prayer

No matter what we pray for, thanksgiving can always go with it. A good habit to develop is starting all of our prayers with thanksgiving. An example of this would be: “Thank You, Father, for all You have done in my life; You are awesome and I really love and appreciate You.”

I encourage you to examine your life, to pay attention to your thoughts and your words, and to see how much thanksgiving you express. Do you murmur and complain about things or are you thankful?

If you want a challenge, just try to get through an entire day without uttering one word of complaint. Develop an attitude of thanksgiving in every situation. In fact, just become outrageously thankful—and watch as your intimacy with God increases and He pours out greater blessings than ever before.

Prayer of Thanks: Thank You, Father, for the way You guide me in prayer. Help me to come to You in thanksgiving before I do anything else. Let gratitude be the foundation of my prayer life. I make the decision today to put aside complaining, being thankful in prayer instead.

As His children, as Believers, His words are for us and to us. He promises to care for us. He tells us over and over that His love for us is unwavering and that His plans will come about despite the time lapse and the events that come in the "in-between" times. Was it easy to "endure" the "stepping stones" as I called them" No. They were more like huge, scary boulders with tumultuous water swirling around them. But "retrospect" is a gift from God. We look back and see so clearly that His plans definitely were for "good and not for evil: to give us a future and a hope."

I know. That isn't always clear for us, but He says, " My ways are so much higher than your ways! Higher than the heavens from the earth! You can't possibly understand them. Just trust Me" (Isaiah 55:8-9).

I have no idea what is going on in your world right now. Mine has some big, scary boulders scattered around complete with the raging waters! But I know'yes I know'that beyond those boulders I will discover His plan for me. Do the boulders go away? No. But I have learned to trust Him who says to me, "I know the plans that I have for you, dear. They are good plans for your future and to give you hope." If you listen carefully, you will hear Him saying the same thing to you.

Oh dear, dear Lord. I know this, but my emotions zoom right up to the top of the ladder and I find myself feeling totally inadequate and scared. That's all right, isn't it?My emotions run rampant without a great deal of urging and I AM totally inadequate! But You are not, and You live in me to face these scary "Caution: Boulders Ahead" times for me. Help me to remember this, please, to cling to these words of encouragement from Someone incredibly strong and powerful and who loves me dearly. Then, too, He knows every "baby" step I will be taking.

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
