GlobeMed at Rhodes College

GlobeMed at Rhodes College Established in 2006, AMOS is a non-profit, grassroots, organization dedicated to improving the health of poor and marginalized rural populations.

We strive to raise awareness about health inequity and provide monetary support to AMOS, our partner organization in Nicaragua while enabling college students to become aware of and use their privilege to empower those suffering from health inequities. OUR PARTNER

Name: AMOS Salud y Esperanza (A Ministry of Sharing Health and Hope)

Location: Based in Managua, AMOS serves the rural areas of Boaco

, Chinandega, Matagalpa, and the Southern Atlantic Autonomous Region of Nicaragua (La RAAS)

Key Fact: Over 50% of Nicaragua’s rural areas lack access to health care and essential medicines. Partner Overview: The lack of access to health care causes problems not only in cases of medical emergency but also contributes to the high incidence of preventable disease. They use the strategy of community based primary health care to increase health care coverage in areas with limited services. AMOS trains lay health workers in rural communities to manage and run their own community clinic, prevent and treat the most common illnesses, and work in community development to address the root causes of poor health such as access to safe water and sanitation. To ensure coverage of each community’s entire population, AMOS works with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health to develop a primary health care system that combines traditional clinical services with community-based health promotion and disease prevention. Project Overview: For the last year, GlobeMed at Rhodes has partnered with AMOS to implement home water filtration systems in rural communities. Access to clean drinking water is a critical health issue in rural areas, and AMOS has made this a priority in their strategy for improving health outcomes. AMOS and GlobeMed have worked together to install BioSand filters in eight communities and this year we have begun the process of following up on the filter project. So far we have seen successful results in terms of a decrease in E. Coli counts in drinking water, reduction of diarrheal disease, and a near 100% user retention rate. GlobeMed at Rhodes will continue to focus on this project in the coming year. Impact: Through its Rural Health Care Program, AMOS has helped 20 communities (12,000 people) achieve access to effective and empowering health care. You can be a part of this impact! Each year GlobeMed @ Rhodes sends two students to Nicaragua for 8 weeks to work with our grassroots partner, AMOS. This year, AMOS has offered two virtual internship positions that, while remote, will offer tremendous insight into the way AMOS serves its community and offer you real work experience. The internship will take place from Monday, May 31st to Friday, July 2nd (5 weeks). AMOS is still configuring what the day to day responsibilities will be, but it will be collaborative in nature. If you would like the perspective from previous GROW interns you can reach out to Shreya Visvanathan ([email protected]) and Vindhyaa Pasupuleti ([email protected]). We will communicate updates as we get them.

Applicants with Spanish proficiency are preferred as there will be more opportunities for Spanish speaking interns to participate in (meetings, data entry that is collected in Spanish, etc.) However, you may apply even if you do not have any Spanish proficiency.

Applications must be submitted by February 5th by 5 PM CST. If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out. You can email Teasha or Riya at [email protected] and [email protected]

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday! If you are able, please consider donating to help us reach our goal of $300 this Giving Tuesday.

GlobeMed at Rhodes fundraises $10,000 each year for our grassroots partner, AMOS Health + Hope. Every dollar raised goes towards providing clean water and basic health care to rural communities in Nicaragua.

Here is why donating now is more important than ever-
🇳🇮 30% of Nicaraguans live in poverty and COVID-19 has exasperated this.
🇳🇮 On top of COVID-19, Nicaragua has been hit by TWO category 4 hurricanes.
🇳🇮 Nicaragua is currently in a sociopolitical and economic crisis.

AMOS has continued their efforts despite everything in their way to continue providing for Nicaraguans in need. The $10,000 We raise truly does save lives. We hope you can help us in this cause!

You can donate on our classy page (in the comments), or straight to our Venmo ().
