Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group Bilingual Theatre Group History

Cazateatro Independent Theatre operated actively from 2006 to 2009, under the leadership of Gio López.

In 2010 there began a new adventure, when a group of women with a shared dream gathered together to make it come true. That dream was animated by love of theater, and at the same time love of their Latin culture and its vast inner diversity. These women began to gather weekly under the direction of Mónica Sánchez, strengthening their work as artists and as a theater company. After evaluating vario

us alternative names, they decided to identify the group by the name Cazateatro, but with a variant that would stress inclusiveness: thus Cazateatro Independent Theatre evolved into Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group.

🎭✨ Back in Memphis, but with our hearts full of memories, learning experiences, and new friendships.

For six unforgettable days, Cazateatro had the honor of participating in the World Theatre Festival in Venice, Florida, sharing this extraordinary experience with theatre companies from Poland, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, Israel, and India.

We proudly represented our Latino community with the original play I Was There: Memories of Those Who Had No Choice, written by Gerardo Rivillas. A powerful story that gives voice to those who have experienced migration and reminds us of the strength, sacrifices, and humanity behind every journey.

Beyond the performances, we experienced something even more meaningful: connecting with artists from different cultures, languages, and traditions. We exchanged ideas, attended inspiring productions, built lasting friendships, and once again witnessed the power of theatre to bring people together beyond borders.

We return to Memphis with new perspectives, new connections, and a renewed belief that our stories matter. It was a privilege to share our voices, our culture, and our community on an international stage.

Thank you to the World Theatre Festival, the organizers, the participating companies, and everyone who helped make this experience possible.

Because when we share our stories, we discover that we have far more in common than we ever imagined.

Representamos con orgullo a nuestra comunidad latina presentando la obra original I Was There: Memories of Those Who Had No Choice, escrita por Gerardo A Rivillas Cediel.

Celebrating Juneteenth 🎆✊

Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day of freedom, resilience, and celebration of emancipation. Today, we join communities across the nation in remembering the courage of those who fought for liberty and justice.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not just a date on a calendar, it's a continuous commitment to equality, dignity, and solidarity. At Cazateatro, we believe in the power of art and community to build a world where all voices are heard and celebrated.

In the spirit of Juneteenth, we celebrate the strength of African American communities and reaffirm our commitment to creating spaces where all cultures and stories are honored.

This week, La Abuela Tomasa brings a classic fairy tale that never gets old 🌲🍬 📖 Hansel and Gretel — Kim Mitzo Thompson (author) · Karen Mitzo Hilderbrand (illustrator)

Lost in the woods, but together. The story of Hansel and Gretel reminds us that fear is easier to face with someone by your side, and that bravery isn't about not being scared, it's about keeping going hand in hand.

What was your favorite fairy tale as a kid? 🧙‍♀️👇

Come see you there. 🌺

GCT presents the winner of the Emerging Local Playwright competition, THE HOUSE by Savannah S. Miller!

“Set in the 1980s, THE HOUSE follows two brothers that come to blows over the sale of their family home. In the 1940s, their mother leaves everything she knew in Puerto Rico to begin a life built on love with their father, a well-meaning but oblivious white soldier from Florida. THE HOUSE examines the Latinx identity—how it has been constructed and depicted in the United States and how it may be truly felt by the individuals who claim it as part of their being. Ultimately, it is a lesson in where we come from and how it may define us, if we only let it.”

🗓️THE HOUSE runs June 25th - 28th, Thursday/Friday/Saturday at 7:30 PM, Sunday at 2:30 PM.

🎟️ Tickets may be purchased online at gctcomeplay.org or through the Box Office at (901)-453-7447, Tuesday - Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM.
