The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Memphis Metropolitan Chapter believes that fair and equitable representation is essential to protecting the voices, voting rights, and political power of the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County. The recent redistricting efforts that divide Memphis communities raise serious concerns regarding the dilution of minority representation and the long-standing principle of fair access to democratic participation.

As an organization committed to advocacy, civic engagement, and the empowerment of Black women, children, and families, we recognize that redistricting decisions have lasting impacts on education, economic development, public policy, and community investment. Memphis is a culturally rich and historically significant majority-Black city whose residents deserve fair representation that reflects the interests and needs of the community.

NCBW Memphis encourages transparency, community input, and accountability throughout the redistricting process. We support efforts that protect voting rights and ensure that every citizen's voice carries equal weight in local, state, and national elections. We also encourage continued civic engagement, voter education, and collective advocacy to preserve democratic participation for future generations.

The chapter remains committed to standing with community leaders, civil rights advocates, and residents who seek fairness, equity, and justice in the representation of Memphis communities.

Yours in advocacy,

Deborah Rivers

Understanding your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio is a fundamental step in mastering your personal finances. Based on the information provided and the financial literacy resources often emphasized by organizations like RISE Memphis here are four key tips on why knowing and understanding your DTI is important:

✅ It Gauges Your "Financial Comfort Zone"
Calculating your DTI ratio allows you to objectively assess your comfort level with your current debt.

✅ It Predicts Your Eligibility for Major Purchases
If you are planning to buy or refinance a home, your DTI is one of the most critical factors lenders review. It serves as a key indicator of how well your money is managed.

✅ It Informs Smarter Borrowing Decisions
More than 40% of Americans are currently looking for ways to overcome debt. Knowing your DTI ratio empowers you to make informed decisions before you apply for new credit, such as an auto loan or a credit card.

✅ It Acts as a Roadmap for Debt Management
Understanding the components of your DTI—such as credit card balances, student loans, and auto loans—allows you to see exactly where your money is going.

The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Memphis Chapter, joins the Memphis community and citizens across Shelby County in mourning the passing of State Representative G.A. Hardaway. Representative Hardaway faithfully served the 93rd House District for more than a decade, dedicating his life to public service. Serving others was not only his duty—but his passion—and he transformed that passion into meaningful legislative achievements that positively impacted our community.

Representative Hardaway’s influence extended far beyond his role as a legislator. He was deeply engaged with organizations throughout the Memphis area, including the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Memphis Chapter. His unwavering commitment to ensuring that women and girls were represented and protected was evident in his actions. On numerous occasions, he shared proposed legislation with our organization, inviting our insight and encouraging us to lend our voices through testimony on critical issues such as domestic violence, officer-involved shootings, and other matters affecting our community.

His leadership and service were also reflected through his involvement with respected organizations such as the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the 100 Black Men of Memphis, and others. Additionally, his role in the founding of the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences and his continued support of programs and initiatives sponsored by our organization are lasting testaments to his dedication and broad community impact.

Representative G.A. Hardaway’s legacy is one of service, leadership, and advocacy. His contributions to Memphis, Shelby County, and the State of Tennessee have left an indelible mark. His absence will be deeply felt—not only as a legislator, but as a steadfast voice for the people he served.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a trusted partner and a true friend to our organization. His support of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Memphis Chapter’s mission, vision, and programs will always be remembered with gratitude.

To his family, friends, and constituents, we extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers during this difficult time.

Happy National Financial Literacy Month!

If you are planning to buy a home, getting educated and organized before you start house hunting can help the homebuying process go more smoothly. From understanding the financial responsibilities of owning a home to finding a team of professionals to guide you along the way, these steps can help you get a firm handle on your finances before you start house hunting.

🏠 Keep an eye on your credit score. Credit is key to getting a mortgage and is one of the factors lenders use to determine your interest rate. Find out what your credit score is and, if needed, take steps to improve your credit.

🏠 Make a budget. Determine if you are financially ready for homeownership by creating a budget that keeps track of how much you earn, spend and save each month. You can adjust from there to save for the expenses of buying and owning a home.

🏠 Save for upfront costs to buy a home. You'll need to save for a down payment, closing costs and other upfront costs. If you're trying to save money, consider setting up a monthly automatic deposit into a savings account.

Happy National Financial Literacy Month!

Make paying off debt a priority. Effective debt management is not just knowing how much you owe, but how you owe. Prioritize paying off high-interest debts and debts that incur high fees or penalties. After you have itemized your debts, use these strategies to pay them off. This method can be repeated on each debt in a rotating basis.

Quick tips to paying off credit card debt:

❄️ Snowball Method – This payment method allows individuals to experience quick wins by eliminating smaller debts relatively quickly by paying off the smallest debt first and paying the minimum on all other debts.

🗻 Avalanche Method – This payment method can lead to faster debt elimination, especially for those with large debts that have high interest rates. Start with debts with the highest interest rate and make minimum payments on each debt, except the one with the highest interest rate.

🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 Negotiate with Creditors/Lenders – You may be able to negotiate a settlement or repayment plan directly with your creditors and lenders. If you choose this option, make sure to speak with a manager that has the authority to adjust repayment terms and get your agreement with them in writing.
