Help the children in your life make sense the world by providing a safe space for them to learn and process.

We believe that and access to quality education is for everyone.

The conversation about race needs to start early and keep happening.

School's educational responsibility doesn't include just the staples like history, math and science. School is a place where children make sense of current events in a safe space as well. NPR has a new comic made just for kids to help them understand Coronavirus.

Educators please be intentional sharing this information with your students. They should know that some things are in their control when it comes to staying healthy and how to show compassion to others who might be sick.

You may have heard the word "coronavirus" online or on TV. You probably have a lot of questions. Check out our comic to get some answers — and print out a zine version at home.

Schools are increasingly incorporating classes similar to what used to be called "home-ec" in their curriculum. As parents are working more or engaging with the "gig" economy to make ends meet, students are looking more to other outlets to help them learn crucial "adulting" skills like financial literacy, cooking and doing taxes.

"Adulting School was founded in 2016 in Portland, Maine, by therapist Rachel Weinstein, who often treated young adults who felt overwhelmed and unprepared for some of life’s everyday challenges."

Chicago is utilizing the strategy of "co-location" for its new public housing projects.

Can you imagine living at the library!? What a dream and beautiful way to make and share space.

Other cities have combined books and subsidized housing, but the outgoing mayor, Rahm Emanuel, has embraced the concept with three striking new projects.

Artists are tackling safety concerns for one of the most dangerous roads for walking in Tennessee. A community charrette, or a meeting in which all stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and map solutions, will find vibrant ways to keep the community safe.

"Last Friday, Harry Williams signed his name on a 20-foot-tall portrait of himself in the cafeteria of Bruce Elementary School, in the building where he learned to read and write and in the room where the first grader was not allowed to eat his lunch."

What a great way to show homage to one of the first black students to be integrated into a white school in Memphis.

We've come so far but there is still so much work to do and that bittersweet notion is captured in these lovely murals that adorn a school that has seen so much transformation.

Memphis artist Jamond Bullock created murals at Bruce Elementary School, honoring the school and the three of the Memphis 13 who integrated it in 1961.

With our urban hubs expected to grow by 1 billion people in the next decade, it's important that cities and communities are planning for the implications of this large influx. One of Vancouver's tools for addressing its housing issues include embracing the concept of "hiving."

"Hiving is the splitting up of existing nominally single-family homes into multiple tenures." The details of this strategy and how it's rooted in the financial reality of each specific region are detailed here.

If you live in an urban city or are considering a move to one, make sure to check out this article on the future of housing in metropolitan areas.

“The idea was to take a holistic approach to resilience,” Schmalbach says. “So, looking not only at infrastructure but people and awareness and culture and workforce development and just thinking how multiple sectors come together to create and demonstrate what a resilient community looks like.”

Art as a mechanism for resilient communities?!

We are loving this approach seen in New Orleans😍

The Maslow Story

A decade ago, our leadership launched a school as a way to revitalize a neighborhood. We realized early on that as good as the school was, the school wasn’t enough. We purchased blighted land, and, in its place, not only built a school, but a whole mixed-use community that included performing arts, healthcare, and housing.

We met some friends along the way who saw our vision and were in total agreement: this work isn’t about developing a school despite the community. The school system shouldn’t have to go at it alone. Instead, we believe the built environment is the tide that lifts all boats (including the school!).

And so, Maslow was born.
